Democracy: Your Vote Counts... Aristocracy: Your Count Votes

Hadrian | 10.01.2001 17:50

Sorry about the terrible joke but a recent article on this site highlighted a change in electoral tactics by anarchists

Perhaps it was the ongoing debacle in Florida which finally jolted hardline electoral abstentionists into realising that whilst voting changes nothing, the consequences of not voting may be even worse. True, people turned out to vote in South Africa having fought their whole lives for the right to do so and have got almost nothing for their efforts. But then again, we now have the prospect of Bush Junior ("...I'm the Dictator... Ha Ha Ha...") seizing power with a very dubious mandate.
So, having decided to cast a vote without illusions, either by writing 'Nobody' or 'Ficus' on the ballot paper or by giving an X to a reasonable candidate, what do you do if you're not registered ?
Never having been an abstentionist myself, I've always been registered, so I'm not too sure. Getting in touch with your local town hall seems a fair idea. If its too late, see if you're still registered at your family home; some parents do this out of sentimentality and it may come in useful for once !
