29 February, Hastings Magistrates Court: A peace activist who won a “partial victory” in the High Court regarding British complicity in torture in Afghanistan was jailed this morning for her part in an anti-war protest.

Peace News Winter Appeal aid delivered to Afghanistan

January is always a desperate time of year for the occupants of the Chamne Babak refugee camp in Kabul. Temperatures at night drop to well below freezing and the little work that the men in the camp can find dries up as the snow begins to fall. This year however some relief was delivered thanks to the readers of Peace News and members of the National Union of Journalists at the Financial Times.

Activist Maya Evans, who spent Xmas in Kabul on a peace delegation with Voices for Creative Nonviolence and the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers, begins her UK speaking tour this Saturday (4 February) with a talk at Housmans bookshop in London: 7pm, 5 Caledonian Rd, N1 9DX (tube: King's Cross).

Other events are already booked for Glasgow, Helensburgh, Edinburgh, Stirling, Darlington, Stroud and Faringdon.

He added that the day before and today, two other women also died in the hospital and in addition to a one-year old girl, two others are still injured ......... As a result of the firing of mortars by ISAF forces, three women were killed in one home and two others injured in another. Haji Mohammad Sarwar Khan, one of the tribal elders of the Zheray district, told PAN on 29th November that the incident took place two days back in the Nalghaam village of the district.

American soldier admits to thrill kill in Afghanistan .... An US soldier admitted to a judge yesterday that it was a “bad decision” to fire a machine gun at an unarmed teenager while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. Private Andrew Holmes, 21, pled guilty to the murder of a civilian yesterday, a year after initially proclaiming his innocence. Speaking in a military courtroom outside of Seattle, Washington on Thursday, Holmes took responsibility for the killing and also admitted to drug use and keeping a finger from the victim as a souvenir.
