Friday 11 January 2008 marks the 6th anniversary of the first ‘war on terror’ detainees being transported to the US military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Amnesty International is campaigning for the closure of Guantánamo Bay and all other unlawful detention camps.

After the US government declared war on Afghanistan, hundreds of people were kidnapped by the Northern Alliance and US military forces under "suspicion" of fighting for the Taliban. What was carefully hidden were the leaflets distributed among mainly Northern Alliance fighters and tribal leaders which encouraged them to kidnap anyone they suspected of fighting.. for a $20,000 dollar reward.

At a public meeting on the 2nd December, we collectively decided it was time for a campaign for the freedom to assemble in the UK. This was in response to continued police repression and the Government's consultation 'Managing Protest around Parliament', which proposes giving the police powers to censor the content of banners and placards, and that the laws about restrictions and notifications which currently apply to marches should be extended to static demonstrations. This is what has already happened in the 'SOCPA zone' around Parliament.

The 'ghost village' of Imber, near Warminster in Wiltshire, was commandeered by the army in World War II for training purposes, with the promise that residents could move back after the war. That never happened and now the village is only open for a few days every year when the army are not activly training on Salisbury Plain.

IRENE WILLIS, a 62-year-old peace activist from Southend, Essex was today sentenced to seven days' imprisonment by City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court for refusing to pay a fine of £50 (+ £50 court costs). The fine was for deliberately obstructing traffic around Parliament Square during an anti-nuclear protest on 14th March 2007, the day Parliament voted to replace Trident, despite a huge Labour backbench rebellion.
