John Bowden attack political liberals

21-08-2008 09:58

John Bowden, a long time class war prisoner, is constantly attacked by the prison service and various so called 'libertarians'. Here, he raises interesting questions about the nature of political action for self described 'anarchists', 'liberals', and 'Marxists'.

Is politics meant to be a holier than thou search for pure working class positions, which the working class are never part of, or is our politics meant to be for liberation of the working classes?

The Natalie Bracht story, the plot thickens

01-07-2008 12:19

This story has been running in the mainstream media, both local and national press, since mother of five Natalie Bracht, left her home in Sunderland on 17th May this year and went on the run. With joint British and German nationality, Natalie settled in Sunderland with her five daughters in 2006. She told local papers and social services that she had fled her home city of Dusseldorf to escape a dangerous husband involved in a religious cult. She was provided with housing and benefits etc but whether the authorities believed this story or not is unclear. What we do know is that Childrens Services were involved in the case from the beginning.

Leeds has enjoyed major economic success in recent years, becoming the fastest growing city in England and number one financial centre after London. Its universities attract thousands of students and retail is booming. All this is reflected in the changing face of the city centre. But is the price of success now too high? The well loved Corn Exchange shops are all but gone; Kirkgate Market traders await an uncertain fate; skyscrapers and over-priced flats are set to dominate the skyline with little consultation while affordable council housing is demolished;

So we ask: Is Leeds going in the right direction? What does the general public think? Are there any alternatives?

This event will discuss the positive and negative things that are happening to Leeds as well as proposals for change. Leeds City Council has a major role to play but it is not alone – the public must have a big say in the future of the city.

Come to this Public Event where your views will be heard, debated and recorded in a public report.

Organised by academics at the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University
Chaired by Andrew Edwards from BBC Radio Leeds ‘Andrew and Georgey’s Breakfast Show’

Rearranging the Rocks on the Deck of the Titanic

21-01-2008 20:19

The FTSE 100 lost 5.5% today, if that happens for another twenty days there is no FTSE 100. The entire edifice of global capitalism has difficulties, meanwhile, the UK politicians and their media witter on about one failed building society.
Given the absence of any serious commentary on the situation here, please allow me to introduce you to 'Kunstler' of 'Long Emergency' fame. There is some 'told you so' shadenfraude to his view of the situation, you can follow his blog over time to see if things get less 'gleeful'. Thankyou.

War On Muslims - Racist Abuse at HMP Frankland

29-08-2007 15:05

A London based group supporting Guantanamo Bay torture camp internees has discovered serious racist abuse being carried out inside at least one UK prison. This life-threatening violence is directed against Muslims whom many believe have been wrongfully imprisoned to help justify the illegal 'War on Terror' and set up by the Metropolitan Police and MI6. There has be no coverage of these very serious racist incidents in any of the UKs National Press and no prosecution of the racists.

Wet and wild, a taste of things to come.

27-06-2007 13:11

Over two weeks ago, the government's chief scientist warned that for the UK, flash floods were likely to be the biggest immediate problem caused by global warming. Sir David King told a committee of MPs that the country would have to prepare for extreme weather such as heat waves and "torrential downpours". Two weeks later, large areas are counting the cost of worst flooding this country has seen for over 50 years.

Messages in Memory of the Nakba (Part 2)

18-05-2007 18:44

This year marks the 59th anniversary of the Nakba (Palestinian catastrophe) in which the Zionist Jewish militias committed a horrendous number of massacres and crimes which led to the displacement of half of the Palestinian nation (around 750,000) from their villages and towns and the occupation of most of Palestine. In the memory of the Palestinian holocaust I have five messages that I would like to send to different people who have a lot to do with this continuing catastrophe: Palestinians living in Palestine, Palestinians living outside Palestine, Palestine solidarity movement activists, the international community and Jews worldwide. Part 1 of this article contained my message to the Palestinians. Part 2 carries my message to the rest of the world.
