The meeting
On Wednesday around 400 people packed into the College Green hall in the centre of Bristol for a rally in support of sacked Rolls Royce trade unionist Jerry Hicks. As well as activists from Jerry’s union Amicus there were representatives from the NUJ, NATFHE, T&G, RMT, CWU, NUT, AEEU and the FBU. Jerry Hicks, a sacked trade unionist working at the Bristol Rolls Royce plant, talked in Cambridge on the Thursday 11th August. The meeting was organized by the Marshall's Aerospace branch of the Amicus Union in Cambridge, but the audience was quite mixed with trade unionists sitting next to anti-war and social justice activists.

23rd July 2005: On a cloudy but warm and dry Saturday afternoon in Oxford, around one thousand animals of the species Homo sapiens assembled in Oxpens Park for a demonstration against the torture and killing of non-human animals in the name of medical "science", and to mark a year since the construction of Oxford University's new vivisection laboratory was halted. There were section 12&14 conditions, speeches in the park, a march to the lab, more speeches outside the lab, and a march back to the park. Jerry Hicks, highlyrespected by his workmates.
Management at the Rolls Royce engineering plant in Bristol recently suffered a humiliating clime down when two suspended workers were reinstated after unofficial strike action. Since then they have suspended popular shop steward Jerry Hicks and today they sacked him. This will almost certainly result in ballots for strike action at the plant and the company’s other depots.
