A take on abstract activism in motion, living, breathing, and coming damn close to performing miracles.

On Saturday and Sunday, Nottingham hosted a national gathering of the UK Indymedia network, bringing together around 40 people from as far afield as Scotland and Bristol.

A whole host of issues were discussed, such as the future of Indymedia, developments on the startpage and calendar, and aspects of moderating the site. A range of viewpoints on the role of Indymedia were expressed, and a number of proposals to take the project forward will be implemented as a result of the gathering.

Here are some interviews with participants at the gathering, from various other local Indymedia collectives..

On Friday 14th an Indymedia activist from Oaxaca, Mexico will come to the Sumac Centre to speak of their ongoing struggle against the unpopular and corrupt governor and the repression that followed an annual teachers strike. Since then, the resistance in Oaxaca has turned into the largest popular rebellion in over a decade. The hundreds of illegal detentions, disappearances and injuries, and at least eighteen documented deaths mark an unignorable part of modern Mexican and world history. Please come on the 14th and show your support. There will be short films, a talk, some music and food... Entry will be by donations to be able to contribute towards the travle costs of the speaker. On the way back from the Schnews media gathering in Brighton, veteran Indymedia contributor Alan Lodge (also known as Tash) comments on alternative media, its aims, its failures and its future.

A new indymedia mailing list has been created to help facilitate communication and collaboration between photographers working on environmental and social justice reporting. If you regularly go out to document protests etc with a camera, please join this list.

On Wednesday 28th March the Notts Indymedia folk will have a get together at the Malt Cross, St James' Street, Nottingham. The get together will start around 7.30pm and everyone with an interest is welcome.

According to its Mission Statement, Notts Indymedia is "committed to offering grassroots... news coverage". Indeed, the editorial guidelines state that "The IMC Collective encourages people and groups to organise horizontally". However, recent changes to the Notts site's editorial guidelines, and the actions of certain members of the collective, suggest that this is not taken seriously.

A photo report from the Knowledge Lab and the Peace Conference, both held at Nottingham University.

Over 50 people came together over the weekend at Nottingham University for an event called 'the Knowledge Lab'. The event is aimed at bridging the gap between activism and academia to reflect in a more indepth way on various issues, this time based around 'Knowledge'.

Workshops were based around questions such as 'how do we know'? what is knowledge'? 'where do we gain our knowledge from'? 'does someone hold control over our knowledge'? 'how does gender affect knowledge'? 'how does education effect knowledge'? 'how are our senses affected by advertising and the media'? 'how can suppressed knowledge be released into the mainstream'? Other sessions included a presentation on alternative education projects, an Indymedia session showing people how to use the website and publish news, and an experiment in anarchism called SOMA - Consensus decision making without the mind/body split.

We recorded an interview with one of the organisers of the event and a chat with a 'knowledgelab-regular' about the history and aims of the knowledgelabs. The last recording is part of a session called Open Spaces for Dialogue and Enquiry (OSDE) which looked at knowledge, what it is and how our knowledge is affected.

Nottingham anarchists and Indymedia activists send their message of support for the struggle of the Mexican people against corruption, poverty, suppression of free speech, for their autonomy and wish to live in peace.

I am writing this article to start working on a response from Nottingham to the brutal killing of Indymedia volunteer Brad Will, while filming at a demonstration in Oaxaca, Mexico on Friday. While Brad worked with New York Indymedia, these issues effect us all and solidarity actions have already taken place in New York, San Fransisco, Chile, Brasil, Canada, and have been planned to happen all over. What could Nottinghams response be? Some people from the Oaxaca region came to speak in Nottingham nearly 2 years ago when their situation grew from bad to worse. Now the situation is one of state assassins, violence and continues repression. What shall we do?

Some people from the Notts Indymedia collective will attend a national UK Indymedia network meeting in London on 4-5 November. Argentinian film makers including director Andres Ingoglia visited Nottingham as part of the european tour of their film "i". Over 60 people attended the screening which also hoped to inspire people about getting active in the local Notts Indymedia.

The film is a meditation on the relationship between media and power as it is manifested by the worlds largest all volunteer network of media activists: 'Indymedia'. The feature-length documentary follows the first year of a small collective in Buenos Aires as it struggles amidst assassinations, a collapsing economy, and a whirlwind of political upheaval.
