In 2006 a plan for an 88,000 square foot Tesco was refused by planning authorities due to the negative effects that it would have on the local area. Local residents were surprised that a store twice the size was proposed, arguing that it would have even worse consequences for the area.
“Such massive superstores are not good for local economies. We support the redevelopment of the cricket ground, but not at the cost of damaging local independent shops and businesses,” said local resident Debbie Ellen.
“We are urging local residents to write to Trafford Council and object to this inappropriately sized Megastore,” she added.
The Kirkby development was stopped from going ahead after John Denham, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, upheld the planning inspectorate’s decision to disallow it.
