RECENT NEWS
===========

As part of our ongoing attempts to be more contactable, we now have a
Manchester NO2ID mobile phone. This number will be distributed on all
future Manchester NO2ID literature and made public on our website etc.
The number is 07982 814441.

Manchester NO2ID praised the Home Office's "National Identity Fraud Protection
Week" -  http://www.stop-idfraud.co.uk/ - by issuing a press release calling on
the Government to help reduce identity fraud by scrapping the National Identity
Scheme and buying every UK household a cross-cut shredder. You can read the
press release at
 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/manchester/2007/10/383303.html

Manchester NO2ID has been organising further screenings of the Taking
Liberties documentary which is now available on DVD from
 http://www.noliberties.com/ - catch a free Manchester-based screening
and then buy the DVD for all your friends for Christmas!

UPCOMING EVENTS
===============

Thursday 8th November 7:30-9pm: Taking Liberties Screening

Manchester Projectile Films, in association with Manchester NO2ID and
Manchester Defy-ID, present a screening of acclaimed documentary Taking
Liberties at the Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, Manchester. The
screening will start at 7:30pm sharp, and will be followed by a
discussion session in the Waterhouse pub on Princess Street.

TAKING LIBERTIES uncovers the stories the government don't want you to
hear - so ridiculous you will laugh, so ultimately terrifying you will
want to take action. Teenage sisters detained for 36 hours for a
peaceful protest; an RAF war veteran arrested for wearing an anti-Bush
and Blair T-shirt; an innocent man shot in a police raid; and a man
held under house arrest for two years, after being found innocent in
court. Ordinary law-abiding citizens being punished for exercising
their "rights" - rights that have been fought for over centuries, and
which seem to have been extinguished in a decade.

Irreverent but revelatory, outrageous but true, TAKING LIBERTIES
combines these real stories of liberty loss with never-seen-before
footage, cheeky stunts and comment from Mark Thomas, leading
politicians, celebrities, human rights organisations, academics and
lawyers. Narration from Ashley Jensen (EXTRAS, UGLY BETTY); a pumping
soundtrack with tracks by Oasis, Radiohead, Stranglers and Franz
Ferdinand; and the presence of Kurt Engfehr, producer of FAHRENHEIT
9/11 and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE add up to make TAKING LIBERTIES the
most explosive and controversial film to hit screens this summer.

Saturday 10th November 1-3pm: Street Stall

We'll be running a Saturday afternoon stall in St. Anne's Square. The
main objectives of the afternoon will be to raise awareness among the
public, engage people in discussion about the NIR, and collect
petitions for the NO2ID petition to keep people in touch with the
campaign. We'll meet in the square itself at 1pm to set up shop; feel
free to join us to lend a hand or just chat. You don't need any
experience or equipment, just a bit of time to spare and a friendly
smile!

Wednesday 14th November 7-9pm: Manchester No2ID Meeting

Manchester NO2ID will be holding our monthly meeting in the upstairs
function room of the Town Hall Tavern, Tib Lane, Manchester. Sadly,
this venue is not wheelchair-accessible; please contact us if you have
accessibility needs.

At our monthly meetings we discuss the state of the NO2ID campaign,
what we've been up to recently and where we're going in future.
Everyone is welcome, newcomer or not, curious or committed. The Town
Hall Tavern serves reasonably-priced, good quality food until 9pm so
you don't need to pop home for tea - you can even order your meal
brought up to the function room.

UPCOMING CAMPAIGNS
==================

Manchester NO2ID's focus is turning to the Scottish Entitlement Card.
This Oyster-style card, rolled out under the guise of free bus travel
for pensioners, already has over half a million people on a centralised
entitlement database used for multiple purposes.

The full story was revealed in this month's NO2ID newsletter -
 http://www.no2id.net/news/newsletters/newsletter.php?issue=82 . You can
subscribe by filling in our petition forms at stalls and other events or
online at  http://www.no2id.net/getInvolved/support.php

Please contact your councillors about this issue at
http://www.writetothem.com/ and make sure that the proposed GMPTE travel
pass is not used to compel Manchester citizens into the Database State.

In other news, volunteers are needed to help promote Manchester NO2ID to
local trade unions, community groups and media. If you can spare an hour
or two to help out, please e-mail  manchester@no2id.net .
