Climate Change Activists Blockade Domestic Flights

Plane Stupid | 08.10.2007 08:28 | Climate Chaos

Activists from Manchester Climate Action and Manchester Plane Stupid have
blockaded the security check-in of terminal 3 of Manchester Airport.
Passengers are being denied access to the departure lounge by seven
activists locked together using arm-tube devices. Two banners have been
unfurled reading, “Manchester City Council...supporting climate chaos” and
“Domestic flights cost the Earth”.

CLIMATE CHANGE ACTIVISTS BLOCKADE DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

Activists from Manchester Climate Action and Manchester Plane Stupid have
blockaded the security check-in of terminal 3 of Manchester Airport.
Passengers are being denied access to the departure lounge by seven
activists locked together using arm-tube devices. Two banners have been
unfurled reading, “Manchester City Council...supporting climate chaos” and
“Domestic flights cost the Earth”. Other protesters are leafleting
passengers with information about aviation and climate change as well as
handing out train timetables for route destinations.

Aviation is the fastest growing source of green house gases and according
to the government is responsible for 13% of the UK's global warming
contribution [1]. The overwhelming majority of flights from terminal 3 are
to domestic UK destinations such as London Heathrow. These are the most
unnecessary flights. The group are calling for an end to all domestic and
short-haul flights and for international aviation to be included in the
Climate Change Bill.

The protesters are also highlighting the contradiction between Manchester
City Council's 'Green City' initiative and their 55% ownership of
Manchester airport . The airport intends to expand its annual passenger
numbers from 22 million in 2005, to 39 million by 2015, to 50 million by
2030. [2]

Green Party Councillor Vanessa Hall, who is taking part in the blockade said,

“Manchester Council say we need the income from the airport to fight
poverty. The Airport costs the people of Manchester in tax breaks and
subsidies – this money should be invested directly into green industries
directly creating jobs and relieving poverty.
Climate Change will have a massive impact on our economy, health and
well-being.
It is environmental and economic lunacy to consider any expansion of
aviation.
We can't be a Green City with an expanding Airport.
I am blockading domestic flights to highlight the true cost of flying and
to call the council to account for their hypocrisy.”

The action today was inspired by the Camp for Climate Action which saw
around 2000 protesters gather next to Heathrow airport in London this
summer.

Robbie Gillett, also present at the protest said, “It is no longer
socially acceptable to fly from Manchester to London given what we know
about climate change. It's absurd when there are train alternatives
readily available. The money earmarked for the expansion of British
airports needs to be redirected towards improving our rail infrastructure.
We're the last generation who can stop climate change and time is running
out.”

hoorah - well done - all protestors now on way home.

Heard that when people did this same action 9 or so years ago, they got summons later, but won in court and all got off.

Making folk miss their flights is a bloody stupid idea, attacking the council for their hypocrisy on the issue - grand, occupying the offices of companies profiting from aviation - spot on! Screwing with people trying to get a cheap flight between a and b - crap!
It's cheaper to fly between some cities than to get the train or bus nowadays, the arrogance of some activists astounds me. I for one would fly if it was the cheapest option open to me on my meager budget. I don't deny the impact of aviation is an important issue but to take action against the general public like this rather than the execs and companies involved is, well, plain stupid!

Screwing with people trying to get a cheap flight between somewhere in the UK & somewhere else in the UK/Europe - great!

It's never cheaper in the UK to get flights rather than take train or bus if you book in advance - it's faster by train too - and even if it wasn't, it's still wrong to fly.

the arrogance of some fly-ers astounds me - trashing the planet for our children.

It is not always cheaper to get the train even if you do book well in advance. What about people who have to travel at the last minute when it is definitely cheaper to fly. I'm not saying that aviation as it is is not a problem. I'm merely pointing out that this action was a sack of shit. It will alienate people who would otherwise be receptive to the arguments of environmentalists. Taking action against the state bodies and corporations who are profiting from environmental destruction is grand in my book, screwing with people in this way is not grand.
Think about it. You're talking to someone and it comes up that you're a climate campaigner, the face of the person you're talking to darkens and they say "you're one of those pricks that made me and the family miss our connection to madrid".
This action was ill thought out and nothing more than a bunch of self righteous pricks making themselves feel like they've achieved something when all they've done is piss people off.

I'm not going to repeat my comments on the other thread, under the other post.

As to the different things you say:
have a think before you call an action a "sack of shit" and people "self righteous pricks", and 3 words - pot, kettle, black

And Ships

Why does cargo shipping the biggest contributer to co2 emmisions out of all the forms of transport go largely ignored by climate activists?
