Between 26 April and 6 May, a host of events has been organised to expose 'Leeds, City of Asylum Shame' (SUMMARY BELOW). Organised by pro-migration group, Leeds No Borders, it all begins at 6pm on 26 April at the Common Place Cinema with a series of films uncovering the shocking truth about how the UK and Australian governments systematically lock up asylum seekers in ‘detention centres’, often for years at a time.
On Wednesday 3 May, 5pm-6.30pm, a campaigning workshop will be held by the National Coalition of Anti-deportation Campaigns on 'How to run an anti-deportation campaign'. It takes place in Leeds Metropolitan University (Lecture Theatre B2, B Building, Civic Quarter).
Then at 7pm in the same venue, a public meeting will take place with a range of speakers and personal stories about Britain's shameful treatment of asylum seekers.
The activities climax on Saturday 6 May with two major events. Starting at 12pm outside Leeds Town Hall, a guided tour to Leeds, the City of Asylum Shame will feature two official tour guides taking people to a number of key institutions and companies in Leeds city centre that form part of the 'asylum control system'.
Then in the evening from 7pm, the Common Place social centres hosts a 'Four to the Floor' benefit gig in which guests are invited to bring and play their four favourite records to raise money to help support destitute asylum seekers and those fighting deportation.
Leeds No Borders invites people and migrants from across the UK to Leeds. If you need accommodation, contact stuart@riseup.net
