Tony Blair still wants to draw a line under the Iraq disaster and move on. Well he might - the June 10 elections were a stinging and massive public rebuke to the government on the war issue.
He is now pinning his hopes on the so-called “transfer of sovereignty” on June 30 to try and put a better gloss on the situation.
In fact, the transfer amounts to little more than devolving local government powers to a hand-picked Prime Minister with no mandate from the Iraqi people but a background as a CIA agent.
British and US troops will remain in occupation – which in turns means resistance and bloodshed will inevitably continue. The destabilisation of the Middle East will remain a danger to peace.
We must demand that the British and US troops withdraw from Iraq – it took the Spanish less than three months to do so. Britain should do the same. And a democratically-elected Iraqi government must be given full powers to run their country as they see fit.
