Summary of Protest against the Labour Party Spring Conference

sprightly | 15.03.2004 14:17

The Labour Party circus rolled into Manchester this weekend (12-14th Feb). What follows is a summary of protests against the event. It is mere personal memories so if anyone remembers anything i forgot, or has any photos, that would be great...

I've never lived under martial law but it seemed to me that during the weekend, when the Labour Party Spring Conference took place, Central Manchester was ruled in a way not too disimilar...The area surrounding the GMEX conference centre, including the Manchester International Conference Centre and the Midland Hotel was completely shut down with several concrete road blocks that were put in place with cranes. There was a massive police and security presence 24 hours a day from Thursday night onwards, including 2-4 police carrying pistols and sub-manchine guns. The Conference was surrounding by a complete rig of reinforced block and mesh fence. There was a designated protest zone that was across the road from the GMEX centre, on Great Bridgewater Street.

Friday

The Manchester Evening Newt, a spoof newspaper produced specially for the event was published. Around 10,000 copies were distributed widely across the city from 8.00 on Friday morning to commuters, shoppers, delegates and other members of public.

Various street theater took place including one about climate change and this one:

There was a mock trial of Tony Blair with guest speakers including ex-MI5 big-cheese David Shayler. Imagine lots of leninists and liberals telling each other how much and why they hate Tony Blair and lots of collective back-slapping.

There was a few hundred strong Fathers for Justice ( http://www.fathers-4-justice.org/) March, that went past the GMEX. Lots of Dads and a few others dressed as super heroes waved purple flags, and chanted protest chants such as:

"Show me the way to go to court, cos i'm stressed and i want to see my kids, i haven't seen them for about a year or two and its gone straight to my heart..."

They were followed by 6 or 7 riot vans full of police men.

Saturday

More Manchester Evening Newts distributed

Anti-war march started at about 1pm from Allsaints Park. There were about 1,500 marchers (personal estimate) and they marched up Oxford Road and passed the conference centre, pausing momentarliy for a bit of a shout.

Ironic "March for Capitalism" which started about 4pm from Piccadilly Gardens. 30 or so people dressed in suits marched down Market Street and through St Anns Square with a banners reading "Capitalism Rocks" holding placards with such ridiculous statements as "FCUK THE THIRD WORLD" and "BOMB MORE POOR PEOPLE". War, what is it good for? Its good for the economy, so buy more stuff and lets bomb more third world countries to make way for capital...Within 20 minutes two van loads of riot police turned up and were evaded for a while but then closed in and confiscated the banner and ripped up the placards because this was an "unauthorised protest". When the pro-capitalist marchers then regathered in the designated protest zone, they were still not allowed to protest.

There was a Trade Justice conference in Bridgewater Hall.

Video diary without Video

In the form of a video diary - without the video - imagination is good...

First, a couple of us got the Manchester Evening Newt, we gave it out in Piccadilly and people took it. This was better than any leaflet, it just went. Over about an hour, two people gave out around 200 copies, easily. Only problem was it was TO real. People said, "I don't want any Labour party shit", and so some people avoided it. But also, people took it, just thinking it was free, and I saw them reading it, laughing, waiting for the bus.

Then we went to the Stop B.liar demo carrying the Ministry of Truth. Two panels of it, side by side, with the Big Brother eye, and info from Statewatch and about the Mental Health Act. We got to GMEX, then stashed it and left. Reactions from people were that it was the most freaky thing they'd seen on the march. and you could see people looking because, amongst the rainbow RESPECT banners and the SWP Blair out placards, it didn't really look cheerful, respectable and safe. So some people were a bit confused, but I saw people reading the leaflets with the big red eye we gave out, looking, reading and then looking again.

And then, people went to do other stuff, which involved a lot of running, laughing, and being pushed around by police. The best bits (for me) were the giving out of the MENewt and the laughing and running. Because those were the bits where it felt like something happened.

If a lot of people had done little things, fast, all over the city at more or less the same time, what would have happened?

Total confusion at least... because it is so easy..
