Asahi Glass Protest latest - arrests and injunctions issued

Nikhedonia | 30.01.2004 12:05 | Animal Liberation | Ecology | Indymedia | Repression

Man arrested for using megaphone as plain clothes police refuse to show warrant cards and photograph and harass peaceful protesters. Bailiffs issue injunctions on behalf of Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Limited.

Animal rights activists who protested outside an exclusion zone enforced by the police on behalf of Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Limited were subjected to harrassment and photographing by individuals in plain clothes who claimed to be police officers but refused to show any form of identification. When pressed on the subject one 'officer' became agitated and briefly stormed away only to return with a bailiff, described as his colleague' who began issuing injunctions.

When uniformed officers arrived one man was arrested for using a megaphone and was forcibly removed to a waiting police van and taken away. Officers refused to state where the arrested man had been taken. Other officers manhandled two women as they tried to recover the megaphone.

When pressed on the subject of civil liberties one uniformed officer made suggestions that the protesters present had been involved in a campaign of violence and intimidation against employees of Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Limited. When asked to substatiate his claims he refused to comment.

Hi FARA,

Was the arrested activist given any warnings before the arrest? Have you found out where the activist is being detained?

Lastly, have you an email address?

UPDATE

31.01.2004 15:24

Subsequent to this report been taken, a second person was arrested for using a megaphone. Both people have now been released, and charged with breaking the injunction by harrassing an employee of Asahi Glass. This employee was none other than the baliff summoned by the two plainclothes coppers, who was smirking the entire time (apparently this is a common sign of being harrassed and frightened) and was actually sent by the coppers into the protestors to sieze the drum after the second arrest. This bailiff was paid by Asahi Glass to monitor and deal with the protestors who are supposed to have harrassed him, despite the protestors going out of their way to ignore him. There is clear collusion between the police (who cant seem to shut up about how fair they are being) and Asahi Glass to put an end to what is just a few people holding banners in a public place, with a small bit of noise. Talk about over reaction, though they are in cuckoo land if they think that it will stop the protests.

We are convinced the police & Asahi Glass will come unstuck on this one, as the arrests are clearly bollocks, and the charges do not have a hope in hell of sticking. In fact, it is going to turn into an own goal on their behalf...

For your information, the man in the photo who is so shy of showing his warrent card is believed to be Sgt 1600 Nasser from Fleetwood Station, and his side kick is supposedly PC Davidson also of Fleetwood.

Do you think that Asahi Glass are out of order and trying to suppress free speech? Then complain to them on 01253 861 800 or their sister companies F2 Chemical (01772 775 800) & Glaverbel (01604 671 150).

"They are at our demos for our wellbeing and protection" ..

31.01.2004 19:02

... The filthy treacherous puppets of the state had the nerve to let us know at an anti-fur demo in Worcester today that they were 'also present to protect us from harrassment'. They told us this as we carried on a conversation between ourselves and weren't too pleased at being COMPLETELY IGNORED as they, the traitors to the people always are and should be ; )

Thanks for the update and Good Luck!
