The Whistler, a fellowship alliance that brings together Compassion in Care, Cure the NHS, the Courage Foundation and the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) is organising a silent protest to stop the abuse of whistleblowers.
Whistleblowers, victims of abuse, union members, students, peaceful campaigners, and all other supporters are invited to meet at Parliament Square at noon on Wednesday, 10 September, to take part in a silent protest against abuse of whistleblowers. We call for a new law, Edna's law, one that will protect all whistleblowers and stop the wrongdoing.
Edna was a vulnerable elderly person who had no family to speak out for her. She was abused in a care home. Seven whistleblowers did speak out and were forced out of their jobs for doing so. The regulator fully upheld the abuse allegations but the company continually denied there was anything wrong. Those responsible for the abuse were protected and promoted. Four years later, it emerged that vulnerable people had continued to suffer. Edna's law would ensure this never happens again.
This silent protest is dedicated to her memory and for all those who have suffered or died because a whistleblower was ignored or too afraid to speak out. Abuse happens because of complacency, ignorance, denial and silence.
But we will break that silence. At 2pm we will blow the whistles, all of us, together.
