On Thursday 12th June a group of Peace protesters gathered outside The Strand army recruitment office to exhibit the real brutality of war. It was a day of awareness as the group displayed images of combat injury to counter the “be the best” slogan infamously boasted by the forces who require that individuals partake in crimes against peace at the risk of their own lives and sanity.

There was particular focus on the use of nuclear weapons such as depleted uranium munitions which has left Iraq and Afghanistan littered with around a millions pounds of radioactive dust causing monstrous birth deformities and soaring rates of cancer throughout. It was a wake up call to all taxpayers to account for their complicity by funding such atrocities.

Some sported banners asking questions such as “would you die for a lie” referring to the infamous “dodgy dossier” where it was claimed the facts were fixed around the policy to enable Britain to go to war. Many of the group were dressed in orange jump suits as worn by Guantanamo Bay detainees and peace songs were played into the street via a loud hailer.

In the stir, the group stood to represent all of those affected by war while ultimately evoking a message of peace to which hundreds of passers by expressed their support, including many school trippers and some “civvie street” soldiers who wished them well in their campaign with opposition from a few seemingly patriotic passers by. The group maintained their non-violent approach and willingness to engage in discussion on all sides of this on-going controversy.

False Information about Depleted Uranium

28.07.2008 08:54

This peace group has bought the myths and propaganda about DU that began when Saddam Hussein's government wanted out from under the UN Sanctions that ended the Gulf War. Unfortunately, the following that they believe is not true

"There was particular focus on the use of nuclear weapons such as depleted uranium munitions which has left Iraq and Afghanistan littered with around a millions pounds of radioactive dust causing monstrous birth deformities and soaring rates of cancer throughout. It was a wake up call to all taxpayers to account for their complicity by funding such atrocities."

Depleted Uranium dust is a figment of the propagandist's imagination that the anti-war activists believe because they do not know that DU is naturally occuring Uranium 238, that they breathe in, ingest and drink a very small amount of natural uranium, including U238, every day of their lives and that this is the same everywhere on the planet.

DU was probably not even used in Afghanistan. DU kinetic energy penetrators were used in the Gulf War and in the drive on Baghdad in 2003 to kill tanks and armored vehicles. They are not used on any other targets than tanks. There were no tank-to-tank battles in Afghanistan. DU was not used to bomb Tora Bora because there are no bombs that contain DU. Mohammed Daud Miraki, whose photos were used by Brian Haw and appeared in your Tate Museum reproduction of Haw's peace encampment, is a con artist. The State of Illinois shut down his non-profit charity in 2005 but he continues to solicit donations. Some of the photos that Miraki claims to have taken in Afghanistan of those monstrous birth defects first appeared in a German Doctor's book after he came back from being indoctrinated by Saddam's government in 1993. At least one of his photos was immediately challenged when it appeared in the British Medical Journal. Unfortunately, all of his photos of Miraki's claimed photos, have not appeared in a comparable medical journal. I am quite sure that if they did that every single one would be challenged by a number of the physicians who view it as being due to rare genetic diseases and not due to depleted uranium as claimed by Saddam's propaganda.

Dr Tillman Keller of the German publisher advised as follows: the first two of your photos show - in my mind - babys with the Harlequin Fetus Syndrome, see

The British Medical Journal published this correction (the misattributed photo in question was the only photo that they had previously published with the article)

Gulf war leaves legacy of cancer
This corrects the article "Gulf war leaves legacy of cancer" on page 401b.

In this news story (14 August, p 401) we published a picture of a “boy with unknown skin disease thought to be linked with use of depleted uranium.” This caption was incorrect. We received several electronic responses (www.bmj.com/cgi/eletters/319/7207/401/a) pointing out that this disease is dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.
