Whilst it is standard procedure to breathalise drivers involved in accidents no mention has been made of whether this was done.
The cyclist, who is believed to be in his 20s, has been airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in east London, where he was in a stable condition.
It is believed the Chelmsford MP was driving a 4x4 vehicle out of the main gates of the House of Commons when the accident happened in Parliament Square at 6.06pm on Thursday.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A collision occurred as a 4x4 exited the main gates. The vehicle stopped at the scene, the male driver was uninjured."
No arrests have been made. The spokesman gave no further details.
[comment - good to see they've got their priorities right in that all they care about is the health of the MP]
Mr Burns said he would not comment on the accident.
Peace campaigner Brian Haw, who has been demonstrating opposite Parliament for nearly seven years, said: "I heard the impact - it was quite loud.
"It looked as though the cyclist had no time to stop before hitting the front.
"The cyclist, he was in a bad way and was being looked after by the doctors. I hope he is all right."

Crazed war monger?
04.04.2008 14:03
Hmm... Not sure if it's totally sensible to describe the guy as a "crazed war monger". But I guess you're right that he did vote in favour of the Iraq war.
Since 2001, Simon Burns has:
Voted very strongly for the Iraq war.
Voted very strongly for replacing Trident.
Voted very strongly against the hunting ban.
Voted moderately against equal gay rights.
Voted very strongly against a transparent Parliament.
But, on the upside, he has:
Voted strongly for investigating the Iraq war.
Voted moderately against Labour's anti-terrorism laws.
Voted strongly against introducing ID cards.
Voted strongly against introducing foundation hospitals.
Voted strongly against introducing student top-up fees.
And you may see it as a good or bad thing that he has:
Voted moderately against introducing a smoking ban.

big f*cking surpise
bastard!
I spoke to two eye witnesses.
he was rather indignant to the whole affair.
the police did not administer a breathalizer test while he was held at the scene for over an hour.
he never inquired once as to the state of health of his victim of negligent driving and most probably driving under the influence of 23 or 27 bars distributing alcohol to the pissheads who role out of Parliament, pissed as farts, on more occasions than the public has been privy to the knowledge of.
i distrust the honour of the police force under Sir Shit Blair to such an extent that I doubt that the sample given was obtained from the MP who is quite happy to mow down cyclists who move with the flow of traffic and watch them careen off his bonnet and face first into the pavement.
I remember when me and Babs watched Odu Moreau flip off his bike some 10 feet into the air and land sone 20 feet away from the place of impact... we both ran to his side to enquire of his state of health.
This cold hearted bastard who is happy to decide which child lives and which sand baby dies in his backing of this God forsaken illegal war... this animal has no remorse for tearing out of Parliaments gates to get God knows where, in such a goddamn hurry... does anyone actually believe that many of those who work behing those cast iron gates of a prison give a flying FCUK about Joe public?
Well, they are gonna learn how to care...
Sooner than they can concieve the lies that they perpetuate.
Get the CCTV of the bars from Parliament and the reciepts... did this man have any bevvies down his gullet?
Have any of the Parliamentary police ever been hit by these goons tearing out of Parliament... I suppose that's just a matter of time before one of the MET's own gets run over while simply trying to earn his crust like the rest.
I expect the real men of the the MET to soon stand up and start arresting these war criminals... I can see that day coming and it's not that far into the future.
