Escada Campaign: Global Campaign Against The Fur Industry

Escada Campaigner | 11.02.2008 22:25 | Analysis | Animal Liberation | Repression | London | World

With over 100 actions in the first 3 months of the campaign beginning and several ALF actions, Escada have now begun using expensive repressive measures and are threatening to sue the domain company due to trademark infringement - "Escada Campaign" being the alleged infringement.

SIDE A: THE CAMPAIGN

In ten weeks since the campaign against the fur trade at Escada began, more than 100 actions have taken place. From info stalls, pickets, civil disobedience, to direct actions. In the run up to Christmas, activists world wide used the whole spectrum of possibilities to express their disgust about the Escada group. The Global Network Against the Fur Industry called out to days of action. [1]

In this months 3 days of action against Escada, 1st-3rd February, the third since October 2007, there were a total of 39 reported demonstrations from; Germany, USA, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Poland, Luxemburg & Austria. The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Ireland and Estonia have also joined the Global Network Against the Fur Industry. [2]

To show that the campaigning is working, Escada have begun using expensive repressive measures and are threatening to sue the domain company due to trademark infringement - "Escada Campaign" being the alleged infringement.

As a precautionary measure the campaign team has set up mirror sites.
In future the Escada-Campaign´s website can also be found under the addresses  http://www.fur-campaign.org and  http://www.antifur-campaign.org [3]

SIDE B: INVOLVEMENT FROM THE ANIMAL LIBERATION FRONT

Since the campaign began only 4 months ago, there has also been a number of actions against Escada from the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). Led by activists in Spain, there have been a series of sabotages as well as the trashing of Escada's HQ in Germany and locks glued in France with the promise of returning.

In the words of activists from Germany "Now the ALF is in the game!" [4]

It's common for the ALF and other animal liberation cells to target those responsible for animal abuse listed from legal and above-board campaigns; but it is rare there is this much persistance and frequency of actions in Europe.

This is much more like the campaigns against major animal lab breeders in recent years, or in the same way Huntingdon Life Sciences are presently met with property destruction towards their profiteers and supporters.

Why is there a particular focus? Probably because activists in the UK originally calculated if you you attack the top of the financial/corporate pyramid, competing companies usually follow suit below. It's a marketing rule aparantly, which then was tried and tested in countries like Autria and Italy against fur selling companies very successfully. [5]

The following actions against Escada and it's subsidiaries (BiBA, apriori, cavita and Laurèl) have been reported to Bite Back Magazine. [6]
