‘Bamako is the capital of Mali and from where director Abderrahmane Sissako hails. In this mesmerising drama Sissako wonders how the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would fare if the people of Africa could put them on trial. Using real lawyers and civil leaders to prosecute and defend the institutions, it soon becomes a damning indictment of the treatment of Africa by Western governments in the name of “aid”. That this is all just a fantasy is clear as the proceedings take place in the courtyard of a bar singer, Melé, and her jobless husband Chaka - the relationship is in trouble and their own personal malaise is used as an allegory for the malaise of the continent.’ (Running time: 118 minutes)
The next film night will be the third Wednesday of February, ie. the 21st. Suggestions for the programme always appreciated; (we won’t be restricted to showing overtly political films unless we feel like it!)
LARC is a collectively-run building providing space and resources for people and groups working on self-organised, non-hierarchical projects for radical social change.
