Pauline Campbell | 08.01.2008 00:43 | Repression | Social Struggles | London | South Coast

A peaceful demonstration will be held outside HMP and YOI Holloway, London
on Wednesday 16 January 2008, at 1.30 pm, for the duration of the afternoon
to protest against the death of Ms Jamie Pearce, aged 24
who died in the care of the jail on 10 December 2007
Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend

(1) Prison address: HMP & YOI Holloway, Parkhurst Road, London, N7 0NU.
(2) Banners will be displayed, and flowers laid in memory of Ms Pearce.
(3) The initial classification for Ms Pearce's death (dated 13.12.07) was "unclassified". Her death has now been reclassified as "self-inflicted".
(4) Jamie was the eighth woman to die from apparently self-inflicted injuries in women's prisons (England and Wales) last year.
(5) Demonstration will be led by Pauline Campbell, bereaved mother of Sarah Elizabeth Campbell, 18, who died in the so-called care of Styal Prison, 2003.
(6) Jamie Pearce was the 40th woman to die in prison custody since Sarah Campbell's death in January 2003.
(7) A total of eight women died in 2007 - the figure represents a 166% increase on the previous year (2006) when three women died.
(8) The demonstration on 16 January 2008 will be the 27th to be held since protests began in 2004.

Police aggression unacceptable

I was present at this demonstration. Police abuse of Pauline Campbell, involving the unjustified and disproportionate use of force, was unacceptable. She was pushed with considerable force by a male police inspector, and sent flying to the ground, as can be seen in the photos:

This ugly incident will fuel further public concern about the use of force by the police.
