Fence down at parliament sq

Eyewitness via despatch | 08.10.2007 15:30 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Social Struggles | London

During today's Stop the War demo large numbers of protesters who had previously occupied the road turned their attention to the fence surrounding Parliament Square green. In the surreal scenes that followed 3/4 of the controversial fence were ripped down and stacked neatly.

About 300 people are currently in square and the situation is tense but jubilant. The body of the main StW march is 200 metres away. There are around 100 cops watching and they are currently cordoning groups of protesters, the largest of which is by the churchill statue. Police seem unsure what to do and StW stewards are ordering people to move on.

Appears a few 1 or 2 arrests so far, no confirmation. Arrest of 20 yr old male in progress.

ONE ARREST

08.10.2007 15:50

I saw one man got arrested pretty brutally by the police. About 3 or 4 people were filming this when a couple of policeman appeared out of nowhere and charged them, knocking them to the floor along with an elderly lady who happened to be standing near by.
