Iraqi Oil Union President to speak in London

Hands Off Iraqi Oil | 17.07.2007 21:51 | Iraq | London

The President of the Iraqi Federation Of Oil Unions (IFOU), Hassan Jum'aa Awad will speak on the struggle for trade union rights in Iraq and the opposition to the occupation's sponsored Oil Law.

7pm, Wednesday 18th July
Small Hall,
Friends Meeting House,
173 Euston Road London NW1 (Nearest Tube: Euston)

The IFOU represents 26,000 workers across Iraq. They have struck three times against the privatisation of Iraqi oil and have forced the Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki to negotiate with them. Despite this, the IFOU is still an illegal organisation.

Hassan has spoken out against the occupation of Iraq and the controversial Hydrocarbon Law, which will see much of Iraq’s oil wealth fall into the hands of foreign oil companies.

Of the new oil law Hassan said 'The privatisation of the oil and industrial sectors is the objective of all in the Iraqi state/government. We will stand firm against this imperialist plan that would hand over Iraq's wealth to international capitalism such that the deprived Iraqi people would not benefit from it…Iraqis are capable of managing their companies and their investments by themselves’

On Monday, hundreds of oil workers demonstrated in Iraq's main oil port of Basra to protest against the draft oil law. You can watch a video of the demonstration here:  http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=cee_1184590207

The meeting has been organised by Naftana, the UK support committee of the IFOU and is supported by Stop the War Coalition and Hands Off Iraqi Oil.
