RSA Screens – The Lie of the Land

On Monday 21st May, at 6.30pm the RSA in partnership with Channel 4, will screen Molly Dineen's Channel 4 documentary, The Lie of the Land. Award-winning documentary maker Dineen chronicles the decline of Britain’s small-holding, independent farming industry as the might of the ‘super’market reigns all-powerful. Sensitively depicted, the film charts the daily life of farmers and agricultural workers, exploring in her view the destructive impact of disease, unsustainable development and how this has been exacerbated by legislation.

After the film, Molly Dineen will be in conversation with journalist and former editor of the Independent and Independent on Sunday Rosie Boycott, to discuss the impact on Britain’s rural economy and traditional way of life.

The film and the discussion will be held at the RSA, 8 John Adam Street.

‘Molly Dineen's programme The Lie of the Land, broadcast by Channel 4 tonight, should have been called The Killing Fields. It is disgusting, revolting and important to watch.’

‘When I started to make the film, I didn’t realise just how much of a watershed moment we’re at for the rural way of life…The more I followed the farmers, the more I realised I didn’t know about the harsh realities of rural living – not to mention the hypocritical way that most people, including myself, see the countryside as a picture-perfect postcard that we can dip in and out of without concerning ourselves with the realities of life there’.
