Weekly US Embassy Guantanamo Protest Two Months Old

dan | 13.04.2007 23:34 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Terror War | London

Eight activists from the London Guantanamo Campaign continued their weekly protest outside the US embassy on Friday, calling for the US military detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to be shut down immediately, and for all the remaining detainees, including the British residents still held there, to either be charged or released without further delay.

Supporters of the campaign have been taking their protest to the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square every Friday evening from 6-7 for the past two months. We want to apply as much pressure as possible to get justice for the detainees and their families. We would welcome as many of you as possible to come along and join us whenever you can.

how many people

How many people attend these protests usually? Looks like just 5 in that pic.

I turned up a couple of weeks ago (week before last I think) and couldn't find anyone. Didn't help that it was raining I guess, plus there were huge road works outside the building so I couldn't actually get directly onto that street so I wasn't sure exactly where people would be.

Sorry you didn't find anyone when you came - perhaps they turned up late? The numbers fluctuate from week to week, and we could certainly do with a boost in numbers, so everybody please come along whenever you can (every Friday 6-7pm)! We eventually had eight people on Friday, as people drifted in from work. As well as the London Guantanamo Campaign, there are often representatives from Amnesty, CAMPACC, the Green Party, Stop the War and others.

Unfortunately, there has been a solid metal fence erected outside the embassy whilst they turn it into Fort Knox, but we don't let that deter us. It's useful to bring a placard on a stick that can be seen over the fence, and to be prepared for some vociferous chanting when the mood takes us! We always gather on the walkway directly opposite the main entrance to the embassy, with the hedge and park in Grosvenor Square directly behind us. Hope to see some of you there soon!
