M19: BearingPoint noise demo

Yesterday, to mark the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, a surprise noise demo was held outside the London offices of BearingPoint, the consultancy company chosen by USAID to draft Iraq's new oil law.

People used drums, whistles, foghorns, saucepans, alarms and their own voices to disrupt plunder-as-usual in the City of London. A BearingPoint employee took a handful of leaflets inside so that his colleagues would know the reasons for the demonstration.

Police arrived after twenty minutes and a Section 14 order was imposed to force the demonstration to move away from the office building. Three people were arrested for handing out leaflets, but were realised without charge four hours later.

BearingPoint is being paid $240m for its work in Iraq, winning an initial contract from the US Agency for International Development (USAid) within weeks of the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. It was charged with supporting the then Coalition Provisional Authority to introduce policies "which are designed to create a competitive private sector".

Entirely coincidentally BearingPoint also donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bush's election campaign...
