Lydd Airport update and latest news from the RSPB
Planning applications to expand Lydd Airport have now been submitted to Shepway District Council and the RSPB have begun working hard to oppose these plans because of the impacts they could have on Dungeness - one of our most important wildlife sites in the southeast. The local council will now consider the plans and decide whether or not to grant permission. We would welcome the support of your group and its members, to protect the unique wildlife of Dungeness and help stop expansion at Lydd Airport.
Public consultation
The Council are going to start a public consultation on the planning applications very soon (probably around the 22nd January), which will run until the end of February. This is a chance for us all to have our say. We want as many people as possible to repsond to the consultation to object to the airport's plans. Writing letters like this genuinely does work - some of our most successful campaigns have been based on high profile letter writing campaigns.
As previously discussed we are going to send a briefing to all RSPB members within your local group's catchment area - over 3,000 members. This will explain the problem and provide people with all the information if they want to write a letter objecting to the proposals. The letter will have my contact details on if people want any further information.
RSPB Lydd Airport event
We are also going to hold an event at our Dungeness reserve visitor centre on the evening of the 7th February for all people, and we would like to invite the members of your group to come along as well. It will be a public meeting with presentations from the RSPB's regional Director, Chris Corrigan, the site manager at Dungeness, Bob Gomes and others. There will be information about the airport's proposals and the wildlife and environmental impacts. We will also be letting people know how they can help oppose the plans if they wish. Again, it would be great if you could advertise this event amongst your group as we want to get as many people as possible along to the event.
