There will be Latin American food and screenings of latest Indymedia
footage straight outta Oaxaca, followed by discussion, then on to live
music with bands from the Latin Americas and Europe, including latino
reggae, acoustic and punk, and DJs Subtagga bringing you a fusion of
jungle, hip hop and reggae.
This benefit is being organised in support of the people of Oaxaca
who have organized themselves as the “APPO” - Popular Assembly of
the People of Oaxaca.
The APPO was formed by more than 300 social organisations that
unified after a major teachers strike was violently suppressed by
the governor of Oaxaca City Ulises Ruiz Ortiz. It started
formally between the dates of 17th and 21st of June 2006. Since that date
the APPO has come to comprise many different sectors of society, working
together
to find a different way to govern their territories and their lives.
During the 6 months of their struggle the APPO have taken back control
of radio stations, tv stations, universities and other public
buildings, rightfully claiming these services and spaces for use by the
people of Oaxaca instead of by the Government as tools to clamp down
on public dissent.
Despite the people's constant, un-wavering, resistance, in the last months
the repression has escalated to the point that it is feared that the
government won’t stop until it has completely destroyed any sign
of resistance by the people of Oaxaca.
The people of Oaxaca needs our support. We will be fundraising for
money and spreading information and awareness of their struggle.
We are asking £5 suggested donation but any other kind of help
such as donated old laptops, digital cameras etc. are also
welcome.
