On the 1st October 2006 an audacious civil resistance initiative to close down, for a whole year, the Faslane naval base in Scotland, where the UK’s nuclear warheads and nuclear submarines are stored, will begin.
The first blockade will be a women's blockade that links Faslane 365 with one of the biggest successes of the peace movement, the removal of 'cruise' nuclear weapons and the closure of the Greenham Common airbase, after the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp was set up in the early 80s.
So Why Stop Nuclear?
The nuclear weapons at Faslane are 8 times more powerful than the bombs that obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. These two attacks killed a combined number of around 214,000 people.
The current Trident nuclear weapons at Faslane drain around £800million per year of taxpayers' money.
Blair wants to spend a further £40billion on new nuclear submarines and warheads to ensure that this country has nuclear weapons until at least the year 2055.
It’s not just nuclear weapons, either, the British nuclear power industry has created the third largest stockpile of plutonium in the world, a stockpile of 102 tonnes with no plans for what to do with it, other than make weapons. One particle of plutonium can cause fatal lung-cancer.
SO COME AND JOIN IN AND LET’S STOP NUCLEAR!
