Terror and Climate Change (opinion piece)

Topher | 11.08.2006 11:30 | Analysis | Terror War | London

In the midst of doom and gloom realizations that the Heathrow 'terror network' is mainly to sideline concerns about the war in Lebanon and head off possible sympathies for the main vicitms in this war, a bright note:
Just as 7/7 pushed more people onto their bikes in London, so too perhaps this farce will help put a few people off flying.

Which is the bigger threat: climate change or 'terrorism'? Given the lives already lost and communities already destroyed by climate change, and the likelihood of much worse yet to come, the spectre of a global 'Islamic fascism', to use Bush's terms, pales into insignificance. Of course, the armies of the West are doing their best to balace up the tallies by bombing civilians so that the indirect cost of terrorism is massively amplified, but the figures still don't really add up.

So perhaps we should all breathe a collective sigh of relief that the latest government scare-mongering has actually cut flights into and from the UK? Indeed, if you have been living under the Heathrow flightpath over the last day you probably noticed a dramatic increase in air-quality and reduction in noise pollution.

So, whilst this scare-mongering is undoubtedly intended to shift attention from Lebanon and the ongoing US/UK inspired terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as bolstering support for an invasion of Iran, we can at least hope that this latest terror-scare will make people think twice about flying.

Shame that impending ecological catastrophe can't do the job, but no silver lining without a cloud, eh?
