The Defra public consultation period is now over and the Government's new waste strategy is going to be formulated. There is still plenty of opportunity to influence the final outcome by showing how strongly we feel against incineration, how harmful it is and how it affects global warming, a major point on the Government's agenda at present. However, we are not going to be able to influence the Strategy on our own, no matter how strong any one local group shouts.
We are therefore urging you to join us in a day of discussion and planning with other groups nationally. This will be an excellent opportunity to get to know others and to share ideas and experiences, weather you have only just heard of a plan for an incinerator in your local area, whether it is already being built or whether it's already operating.
The Morning session will start with an introduction by Eve Barker of the DIRT Magazine, followed by a speaker or two, and the workshops. This will be an opportunity to work with others in the same situation to determine the best strategies to use at a local level, both before and after the incinerator is built.
a.. The afternoon session will start with Dr Jerry Thompson speaking about the Health Effects of Incineration, followed by a discussion on how to organise and coordinate national activities to keep up the pressure together, and we need to tap into the wealth of talent, knowledge and ideas which we know are out there. By the end of the day, we aim to have decided on a series of activities and interventions both locally and nationally.
We have been taking bookings for places at the meeting and have had a very good response, but we need YOU to get involved. We are hoping that this meeting will offer everyone new tools for your local campaign, and we hope that you will become part of a national campaign to oppose the Government's strategy.
Please send this to your friends and colleagues, especially if you can't make it yourselves. It may even be an eye-opener for some of them.
All we ask for is £5 a place, and if you are able to offer any further donation, this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you to those who have already sent in their confirmation and cheques. You will of course be able to pay on the day, but please let us know that you will be coming so we can reserve you a place, The venue does have a limited capacity, so first come first served. We would hate it if you were disappointed, we would be even more so.
We will be sending you all an agenda and detailed directions of how to reach the venue, Birkbeck College, London, WC1E 7HX, hopefully at the weekend.
If you would like to confirm your place, please make your cheques payable to SAIN and send to 2 Springfield Cottages, Slough, SL1 1LU.
Hope to see you on the 27th May.
Best regards,
Eve, Yolanda and Greg
