Critical resistance Survey for people in prison, people formerly in prison, and family members

Dear Friends and Allies,

Critical Resistance (CR) is a national grassroots organization whose mission is to end society’s reliance on prisons as a "solution" to social, political and economic problems. We work through ten chapters across the country in campaigns and projects that push us closer to this end.

CR always seeks to be guided and led by those most impacted by this crisis: people who are or have been in prison, family members, and survivors of police violence. That’s why we are asking for your input about the issues you see as most important, the issues you would like us to work on in the future, and the issues you would like to join us in working on.

CR hopes that this survey reaches as many people most impacted by these issues as possible. We would like you to share this survey with your families, communities, faith communities, and any other people or places where those of us who have been impacted by this crisis are.

Obviously, we cannot work on every issue and the list below does not include everything we could take on. We also know that our allies are working on some of these issues already, so this survey may lead us to join existing work. We hope you will help guide our work by filling out this confidential survey. We are also always happy to talk to you

further about these ideas. You can call us at 510.444.0484 or at 212.462.4382. If you are in prison, you may call us collect.

Finally, we need you to win! Please consider getting involved with your local CR chapter.

While we are not requiring you to share information about yourself in this survey, if you are willing to give us your name, and contact information, particularly where you live, that would be most helpful.

With much thanks and in solidarity,

Critical Resistance

2nd Renaissance -21

There is a common piece of street wisdom that describes how to determine who is really running any strange town that you come to on a journey. The advice is to listen to who is mentioned in conversations about the affairs and administration of the town. It is never the people who are talked about in connection with town matters or politics who are actually running things. The rule says that it is always the people who are never mentioned who are in real control. If you want to know who has the power, find out who is never mentioned as having any. When you begin to learn about and debate science with other non-scientists like yourself, remember this piece of street wisdom. Nothing is what it seems to be. The mayor or the police chief might seem to wield the power but, in reality, the power lies elsewhere, and that truth is seldom mentioned.
