Suburban Racism

A family in Southgate, north London held a protest on Saturday, 25 March, 2006, about continuing racial abuse from some of their neighbours.

Over the last 9 months, the family of Zubair Ansari in Southgate have received over 200 racially abusive letters from a few people who live in their street. They have also been called names, and their cars and property have been damaged.
This abuse has come from well educated middle-class adults who live in one of the capital's greener affluent suburbs. The family have complained to the authorities, but the abuse continues, and they decided to show they did not intend to tolerate it by calling a demonstration outside their home on Saturday, inviting full media coverage.
While I was there, I was the only reporter or photographer, although two councillors from the neighbouring borough who live close by came to find out what was happening and give their support. Otherwise the media seem to have chosen to ignore it.
It wasn't a big event, but I think it important to take a stand and support those who do so. There are a few more pictures from this event on My London Diary ( http://mylondondiary.co.uk)
