Today’s youth feel increasingly discriminated, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and suicide are all on the increase – yet today’s youth feel more idealistic than ever. They yearn for a world without violence, they see no reflection of their values in today’s society that places the value of money as the most important value.
In this situation instead of participating actively in organised social change they increasingly isolate themselves, saving their idealistic expressions to anti-war marches and anti-capitalist events.

The youth of today are not heard and they have given up caring if others listen or not.
The challenge of organisations involved in social change is how to engage with today’s youth, how to empower the youth so that they can channel their energy and idealism in a direction that meets their aspirations.
An open meeting to discuss this theme will be held on 28th/29th March 2006 at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn, London from 7pm to 10pm.
The meeting will take the form of a speaker meeting with a panel of up to 4 speakers having 15 minutes to present their points of view and experiences, followed by an open discussion with questions to the panel. A wide participation will be encouraged.
Our guest speaker is the ex-presidential candidate in the recent Chilean elections, the Humanist Party candidate Tomás Hirsch, who, in a coalition with over 50 left-wing parties and grass-roots social organisations received 5.4% of the vote or over 500,000 votes. During the campaign Tomás made an extraordinary impact on the youth vote with all organisations in the coalition noting a marked increase in youth participation.
This activity will be hosted by the London Centre of Cultures together with the UK Humanist Party. Your organisation is invited to propose a speaker to take part in the event and bring along any activists who have an interest or experience in working with youth.
