How Tower Hamlets Council is wasting precious cash to shield Crossrail

Khoodeelaar! Brick Lane London E1 No to Crossrail hole Bill | 20.02.2006 10:50 | Analysis | Social Struggles | London | World

London's East End Borough of Tower Hamlets is witnessing a unique political confrontation between large parts of the constituency and the Council over Crossrail. The contents of the hybrid Crossrail Bill now in the UK House of Commons is at the centre of the dispute that has already caused serious political repercussions in the area. The Khoodeelaar! Campaign against Crossrail hole has been mobilising support against the Council in an unprecedented way.
The community is opposing Crossrail plans. Including the dubious 'need' argued by Tower Hamlets Council for aCrossrail station at Whitechapel. Campaigners are set to publish later today [Monday 20 February 2006] legal grounds for a High Court action against the Council.

Tower Hamlets Council, 'representing' some of the UK's most
socially deprived parts, is embroiled in probably the hottest political confrontation to be found this side of the 4 May 2006 local elections. This is over the Council's promotion of the Crossrail scheme. The Crossrail schme - dubbed by Khoodeelaar! as 'the Crossrail hole Bill'- includes a big and devastating hole to be dug bang in the middle of the world famous Brick Lane area. To confound the problems, the Blaired Tower Hamlets Council has been making cash overtures to entice protesting community members away from the stand against Crossrail hole. Khoodeelaar is today [Monday 20 February 2006 – at 1400 Hrs GMT] publishing the legal notice it is serving on the Council warning that High Court action will follow unless the Council stops the bribing activities.

sorry but...

I'm amazed at how much you post news of anything to do with your campaign on Indymedia. I hope you're equally busy getting info out locally in other formats.

You should check out what proportion of the newswire you manage to take compared to all the other campaigns and actions people are involved with.

This does not mean I'm not in solidarity with you and what you're doing - only I'm not in London (some people aren't, you know!), I'm busy with 101 other things, and frankly, I'm not that interested, though I understand how dodgy and devastating it might be where you live. So maybe a little less please? You could do a fortnightly digest (unless of course it was actually an action which you'd want to post straight away). Perhaps?

not in London & busy!

Thank you for your comment but we are left with no option but to keep all the people that we can reach aware of what is going on. Our very survival as a community is at stake here. Unlike Crossrail promoters who have been given hundreds of £millions of public cash to promote their project at the expense of the people, we are doing this as an entirely voluntary action to defend our community. We do not seek nor foresee nor expect to receive any benefits in any material way for this work. We do what we do because this is that important. Not for careers. Nor for office, not for cash. All we want is for Crossrail to leave us alone.

If you can tell us which 'mainstream' media has done the job of giving the information on our campaign then we shall consider that. And if the media are shown to have covered the substance - and the range - of what we have been posting then we shall consider your point about frequency and volume.

Otherwise the only ay we can see any conclusion is if the current CrossRail hole Bill is fundamentally redrafted changed or better still scrapped.

Thanks once again, we welcome genuine comments and we take every comment seriously and we are not likely o refuse to engage in debate only because you may not agree with our opposition to CrossRail attack on our community
