Video - hacklab, open source and free radio

Here are two videos which we don't think ever got uploaded and we are doing so now for the sake of ensuring that we document and archive as much of our collective history as possible.

These are both short videos made at the rampART social centre.

One is about the rampART Creative Media Lab and was made entirely using open source software.

The other is about the rampART radio project and was made during a workshop on video activism.

Both films have been screened occasionally at events themed around social centres and squats. Screening quality versions are available from Real2Reel or may be downloaded from video.indymedia.org

These two are in H264, a MP4 variant (I think it's used for high def TV) with MP3 audio.

They are really small but great quality.

(fuck knows why this article got promoted, I only posted it for posterity's sake. Nothing else I posts gets promoted even when I spend hours researching and writing)

Your Xvid version doesn't play

Under my correctly set up windows, I can play every other Xvid and DivX file out there but both of yours will only partially render using media player or media player classic - as reported by Gspot codec identifier. It does play ok with VLC but probably 95% of windows users will try and play it with media player. Sorry but this isn't a good advert for open source if it can't create compatible files.

Plays okay on my mac

Strange. The files are .avi wrapped xvid with mp3 audio. Nothing particularly unusual. They play okay on my mac under Quicktime player, VLC, mplayer, xine, and even real player. The only player I tried which wouldn't play them was the mac windows media player. Seems like it more a question of the microsoft player not being compatible rather than the video but that certainly would exclude loads of people who still use windows media player. Then again, if they can install an xvid codec then they could and should install VLC.

Neither would play on my standard WINXP Media Player or its Quicktime, or in my MAC OSTiger Quicktime. However, the 'How about these' versions are OK and work in Media Player, Quicktime, and also open in IE and Firefox on both platforms. Maybe it would be a good idea to stick to MP4 in future to maximise audiences. It is simple enough to make them appear bigger.
