STANSTED EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT AS AIRPORT ACTIVISTS FACE COURT
9th December – British Airways Authority (BAA) will today announce its plans for a second runway at Stansted Airport, despite the fact that air transport is the fastest growing cause of climate change. As the UN Montreal Climate talks come to a close, three environmentalists who last week attempted to disrupt a meeting of air industry executives will appear in court near Bank, London charged with obstruction of a highway.
One of the activists appearing in court explained, “Air transport is the fastest growing cause of climate change and the idea of expansion at Stansted, or any other airport for that matter, is sheer craziness.”
He added, “The government has to show it is committed to stopping climate change, and oppose all airport expansion. It’s no good Beckett spouting hot air in Montreal unless she puts sentiments into action by standing up to stop climate crime at home. The government can be assured that we are committed to taking direct action to stop airport expansion.”
This morning at around 7am, as BAA met with city analysts at the London Stock Exchange, climate change activists were there to greet them, leafleting staff in the city as they arrived for work.
At 11am, BAA will hold a press conference at Enterprise House. This will be followed by a press conference from Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) at the Raddison Hotel, Stansted at 12.45pm.
Last week, Earth First! protestors stormed the world’s biggest aviation industry conference hosted by the Institute for Economic Affairs at the Hilton Hotel in Aldwych with rape alarms attached to helium balloons.
