London No One is Illegal and no borders have a meeting and discussion on Monday from 7pm, during the Disarm DSEi Conference, on the evening before the arms fair opens.

ISSUES

Arms traders need war to make a profit. Wars create migrants and refugees, people who are constantly crossing the borders, voluntarily or involuntarily, with or without visa, politically persecuted or fleeing economic hardship. We have invited three speakers to discuss these connections, the fallout of wars, and the practical politics of noborder activism.

Helen Bamber, founder of the Medical Foundation for the Victims of Torture, has recently set up another foundation dedicated to the support of refugees suffering the physical and mental tortures of war.

Hugo Charlton, a barrister, will speak on behalf of the Campaign against the Criminalising Communities about the impact of Britains 'War on Terror' on refugee communities. He is also Chair of the Green Party.

A speaker from the Campaign against the Deportation of Children will talk about the specific impact of deportations for children as a particularly vulnerable group. We will raise the question what it means to campaign for the children, but not the parents.

There will then be a discussion on ways in which we can actively support refugee and migrant communities in London.

NEXT STEPS

This is the first of a series of noborder meetings in London, where we'll try to combine contributions of invited speakers with inspirations for further noborder activity.

On October 1st, no one is illegal has called for Days of Action, Days of Outrage, Days of Rights for Sans Papiers!. Noborder groups in Manchester and Sheffield are planning events - there's scope to do something in London as well.
