Explosions Rock London..

ben | 07.07.2005 09:56 | London

THis morning a series of explosions, aparently attributed to a power surge, resulted in many injuryies and at least two deaths at London Underground stations...

I personally witnessed two bodies which I assume were dead and not injured due to lthe absence of parmedics, being carried from aldgate station in East London. (footage to follow)

News sources are reporting at least five explosions in London stations and on a bus which suggests something other that a power surge as earlier reports suggested.

Selling photos?

I thought of the indymedia network to be a non-commercial one and not to present a platform for selling photos to mainstream media!

Crazy Town

07.07.2005 11:35

This is so harsh. My workplace was in shock this morning as everyome was accounting for each other and their loved ones. As each report of the bus explosions followed we got more and more nervous, then anger followed.

I think its strange that the G8 and the Olympic bid are accompanied by this attack - Sky News mentioned Israel quite early on - dunno what you all make of that scaremongering I suppose.

I think us Londoners should continue to suppport each other in harsh times - our beautiful town is now a warzone on a bigger scale than mere talk. My heart goes out to those who have learned they've lost their loved ones or colleagues. RIP.

I only hope the important issues at stake are not overshadowed by these events and that Bush et al will not do anything more stupid than they already have (ie Iraq / Afghanistan)

London unite against the hate. One love, Charlie

Army on Streets in covent garden

07.07.2005 11:53

Reports are of the Army on the streets of Shaftsbury Avenue called in to support the emergency services. Workers are being locked in buildings and told to shut the blinds.

Alex

PS. Tony, "our values" are responsible for the poverty and blight which is the root cause of insurgent struggle against the bloated capital of the Western democracies. You drop bombs on them, Tony, what do you expect in return?

more are dead, hundreds injured

07.07.2005 13:47

according to AP
 http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BRITAIN_EXPLOSION?SITE=VOICESD&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

there are 40 confirmed dead and 300 injured.

The media themselves are like headless chickens and are reporting on rumours hoping that if they're confirmed later then they'll have been the first to have broke the story.

At first it was 7 explosions but now they say it is 4 explosions, 3 on the tube and 1 on the bus.

I'm personally disgusted at the journalists swarming around survivors who are visibly shaken and in shock interrogating them for details. The job has to be done, indeed, but some of the people I've witnessed have been in obvious need of medical attention.

Agree with the previous comment, all those police - where were they in London? That's not to say I blame G8 entirely, but I'd like to point out that it's happened at the best time for the ID card bill that's being so desperately pushed through parliament.

Michelle

don't jump to accusations

07.07.2005 14:04

None of us know who caused the explosions or for that matter why. So it's simply stupid to blame anyone and that includes Blair (not that I would give the lying b the time of day).

And for those few that are whining about how the attacks will take minds of G8 - people have died you sad narrow-minded morons.

Answers Maverick / Andy?

07.07.2005 14:04

Response to Maverick
With all hindsight wouldn’t it have been ideal that the human mind could predict future goings on.

Maybe then we could have a ring of steel round London tube stations if they weren’t concentrating on arseholes from all over the world wrecking a beautiful country called Scotland in the name of “protest”.

Your point is weak, feeble and is no longer upon my mind.

Response to Andy
The army on the streets of London. Given the fact that the army are the main party responsible for defusing possible bombs etc. not really surprising is it? Maybe your looking for certain people on this website to put two and two together and say five?

Billy

values

07.07.2005 14:48

well said alex, i have a suspicion we are in the same building.

we won't have time to cry our dead, will be too busy getting tagged like dogs running under cctv and all the clever big brother security inventions they are going to come up with, thnx to a big stamp of approval stolen from fear.

i know you can't keep pissing on people's heads without getting smacked back in the face at some point, i understand that some of the kids who blow themselves up think exactly that.
yet you can be sure that those manipulating bombers are not interested in any kind of values whatsoever, you think they do it because they're out on a moral cruisade? that would be fucking naive.
they don't bomb because of our values or lack of. they send the weak to kill and be killed for their own private sake. values died on both sides a long time ago

Blair's fault (????)

07.07.2005 15:00

>> tony blair deserves personal responsibility for this

Were the blasts triggered from his mobile 'phone? No... at least, I'm fairly sure they weren't.

>> he doesn't deserve the olympics

As much as I dislike the thought of London-centric planning... yet again... I have never suspected for a moment the award was to Tony Blair.

Arrant nonsense, Steve.

Alec

what timing

07.07.2005 15:01

this is dreadfull.

we have seen no evidence to point to who is to blame and so should not make ANY assumptions.

For the moment poeple have died and are dying so hope as many as possible get better, and my heart does truly go out to the families. now is not the time to point blind rage blame but to help people who need it.

whoever is to blame there is no doubt that blair and bush will capitalise on this to yet further increase the big brother state and to further spread their antics over more parts of the globe. God damn it! I can see this as a pretty big turning point

But what fucking timing, its going to make the protesters look like right twats on the media.I reckon blair will be saying something like, just as we were about to save all the starving children in africa these terrrorists stop us from doing so.

billy:
"Maybe then we could have a ring of steel round London tube stations if they weren’t concentrating on arseholes from all over the world wrecking a beautiful country called Scotland in the name of “protest"

sounds like your next line is going to be "the protesters suck and we need ID cards"

LONDON BLITZ? What about Iraq?

07.07.2005 15:08

The take from the NYC Indymedia:

LONDON BLITZ? What about Iraq?
by Clayton Hallmark
(No verified email address) 07 Jul 2005
Modified: 10:05:20 AM
Horrifying pictures are coming out of Iraq today and every day -- have been for almost two and a half years. And all the media wants to show us and talk about is three subway blasts and a bus blast in London. These are white people! They share our history! They share our religion!
If you want to see the face of horror, look for images of Iraq on www.antiwar.com or www.jihadunspun or Google.

What has been happening in Iraq -- that is what is BARBARIC.

What happened in London is a consequential TRAGEDY. I hate that it happened. It is terrorism, and I hate terrorism.

What the UK and USA have been doing in Iraq is even worse -- it is state-sanctioned (Not in Our Name?) and thus is on a scale orders of magnitude greater.

TED KOPPEL: The next time you feel like reading names on the air, read off the names of civilians killed in Iraq. Whether it is 5000 or 12,000 or 100,000 (as the British medical journal Lancet and the US Johns Hopkins University research shows) -- I guarantee that you will be opposing the war after reading for a few days.

It is time to leave Iraq. Cut and run? Hardly. Defend the US, yes, but that is not what Iraq is about, and you know it. It will be much easier for the Army to defend the US if we use it for its intended purpose rather than as an economic instrument.

Anon

Revenge???

07.07.2005 15:19

1. The fact that Tony Blair supported the "fixing of intelligence and facts around the policy" to invade Iraq is the most likely reason for this.

2. If IRAN is fingered for this... it's just as likely to be an inside job. Bush wanted to attack Iran since May. Ex-weapons inspector, Scott Ritter said Bush was aiming for July... this would perfectly coincide with what Bush and co. want.

---

I'm upset that this has happened... but unlike some in the media, I'm not going to talk crap by stating this was "without a reason"... many of us know the reason.

Our leader helped push the UN into a war based on a pack of lies.

Our leader helped invade a country (and assisted in the pre-war bombing "spikes")... yes... "bravely" (unlike those coward terrorists!!) he sent our troops to drop bombs from the sky.

Now they're coming back dropping their own bombs on us... in the most cowardly of ways... by hand.

---

What did Blair expect when he lied us into a controversial war against so many people??

Sincere condolences to anyone effected by this... no matter who's to blame... it's tragic and my thoughts are with you at this time. :(

Slaughter of civilians - haven't we seen this before?

07.07.2005 16:30

God what a horrible thing

I wonder how many of the dead and wounded protested against the American/British attacks on Iraq (and Afghanistan).

Horrible to take the Government's policies out on ordainary people who opposed these policies in their millions.

Mind you, I expect that's what the normal Iraqi people thought when they got bombed because of who their leader was.

It's all a mess, as with any war. Anyone got a neat idea how to make it stop?

American Stands With UK Dead, Against the War on Terror!

07.07.2005 19:19

I must begin with condolences for those who have suffered in New York, Washington, Afghanistan, Iraq, Madrid, Palestine and now London in this "war on terror." The peoples of the world are united against the atrocities committed by either side and demand charity and compromise before plunder and hostility. This can be the only path to peace and the best possible way to commemorate the dead--not the people who make the policy of nations.

What happened in the London this morning...

This is not good.
The violence is very counter productive to the good things going on at the g8 meetings. And this was the first time they were ever trying to do something good. Now this happens and bush gets to come out and look like john wayne again, the all-american cowboy, the hero. What happened to yesterday's bush, whose ratings were at a severe low for any president as our oil barrels reached an all-time high? Literally, yesterday bush, on his 59th birthday, rammed his bike into a British police officer, scraping his own hands and sending the patrol to the hospital. That was funny. This is not.

I’d like to say that what has happened in London, Madrid, and New York (washington dc is another story) is greatly the fault of the leaders of nations for ignoring the concerns of average people, whose lives are affected by their decisions. However, you can't blame one side or the other in these instances. This simply reaffirms that we should belong with neither. We are the people in between. We are the people they ignore. We are the victims of profit and conquest. When we stand with others whose voices are unheard we should work together and use our might to rid our own systems of wrong and evil before forcing others to do the same.

Today, I an overwhelmed with sympathy for the people who were injured, empathy for those who are afraid, and pity for those who are duped by violence committed in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence, in response to violence in response to dxfgdshdghfgjghdjhv.dfsa.fskdvs vs,v

Watch the ratings soar today as profit margins increase from suffering. When we depend on news as our biggest source of entertainment, we'll keep producing gangsters, killers, and child molesters to feed it. i want an admirable role models, not gangster presidents.

Inform yourselves!
