The new documentary film "When I am Misery, I Sing" was awarded the SNGCI Prize for the best Innovative Production at the 2005 Rome MusicDocFest. The jury said, "It’s a vivid picture of the intense power of music and revolution, represented in a journalistic style."
Since Haiti’s independence, 200 years ago, music has been the country’s newswire. In January 2004, on the eve of the bicentennial independence celebrations, Haiti’s modern day troubadours are calling for President Aristide to stand down.
In a country crushed by repression, music is once more summoning up the spirit of revolution and carnival becomes the battleground where the president’s supporters are making their last stand. Shot with incredible immediacy, this documentary covers the ten weeks surrounding President Aristide’s departure following partisan musicians on both sides of the political divide.
Haitian-American director Michelange Quay's "The Gospel of the Creole Pig" lays out - and strips bare - the West's economic and cultural pillaging of the Third World. This short film was first shown at the Cannes film festival in 2004.
The evening of films is part of the French Institute's Mosaiques 2005 - a festival of world culture - a trans-national voyage that covers travel writing, road movies and music, and moves from exterior to interior space, to give UK audiences a valuable insight into the mindsets of people from other parts of the world.
