G8: Live8 Concerts to Mobilise 1 million for Edinburgh July 6th Demo!

this is big news... | 31.05.2005 17:10 | G8 2005 | Culture | Globalisation | Social Struggles | London

Following intense media speculation the plan around the Make Poverty History alligned Live Aid concerts is currently being revealed.

The concerts on July 2nd will be used to encourage hundreds of thousands of people to then make the journey up to Scotland for the start of the G8 Summit on Wednesday 6th July.

The Live8 website has gone live today:  http://www.live8live.com

The simultaneous concerts planned for Sat July 2nd in Hyde Park London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, and Philidelphia are, as the official website says, "just the beginning".

While these concerts, including the Hyde Park London gig, take place on the same day as the predicted massive Make Poverty History Demonstration in Edinburgh - another protest is now being outlined to take place in Edinburgh on the first day of the actual G8 Summit on Wednesday 6th July, and what's more this will be followed by another massive pop concert in the evening in Edinburgh.

Geldof said "massive fleets of trains, trucks, planes and private boats" would move towards Edinburgh after July 2nd for the eve of the G8 summit on July 6.

Many other protests are scheduled around the G8 summit including a blockade of Faslane nuclear subarine base. On the first day of the G8 Summit, July 6th, there are also plans by groups to blockade the Summit itself, as well as a march expected to attract at least 10,000 people which seems set to defy police attempts to ban it from taking place at Gleneagles train station.

Extract from Live8 website:

"2nd July is just the beginning.

The five LIVE 8 concerts taking place around the world mark the start of "The Long Walk To Justice"

Ahead of the G8 Summit, hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe will make their way by land, sea and air to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, to show the leaders of the world's richest nations that they must act to stop the scandal of extreme poverty.

The event will culminate on the eve of the G8 Summit on Wednesday 6th July with the final mass moment before the eyes of the world turn to those 8 men in that 1 room – one final chance to say now is the time, this is the year, YOU can make poverty history..."

Geldof's Band Aid partner Midge Ure is co-ordinating the protest. He said plans were being made for a convoy of planes, cars, trucks, ferries and private boats to take people to Scotland.

"We don't care how you get there. But you have got to get to Edinburgh and let them know what we think," he declared.

"Give up home and school for a week. It will be just like the Ban the Bomb protests in the sixties - something special.

"You may never have this opportunity again. These people are on our shores and we can do something. Stand up and be counted."

Every householder and religious institution in Edinburgh was urged to offer hospitality to the protesters.

"We want every church, chapel, synagogue and mosque to open their doors and let them in," he went on.

"Scotland has an amazing history of being hugely big-hearted."

The people of Scotland should have a right to influence the G8 summit, according to the musician.

"Scotland is a little miffed that this is happening on their own doorstep and they are not invited."

POLICE RESPONSE

The "party" will take place four days after the Make Poverty History march previously announced for Edinburgh on 2 July.

Lothian and Borders assistant chief constable Ian Dickinson said the force understood the motivation of those who wanted to eradicate poverty in Africa and officers would help them to achieve their aims.

"Public safety is my over-riding concern and that requires consultation and planning," he pointed out.

"We need to know the realistic scale of events and work with organisers to achieve what is possible.

"We were already planning for more than 100,000 people to take part in the Make Poverty History march which would have been the biggest event ever in Scotland.

"Now there has been talk of up to a million people coming to Edinburgh but frankly it is difficult to conceive how they could all get to this area in the first place and where they could assemble in safety.

"No-one wants tragedy to distract world attention from the real aims of the campaigners."

Mr Dickinson said the force could not allow the policing capability or any infrastructure to be overwhelmed and compromise the safety of those involved.

Bob Geldof: applying preassure to the G8

Geldof wants protesters to begin the journey to Scotland immediately after the concert on Saturday July 2.

The proposed demonstration in Edinburgh a week later will alarm the police and security forces protecting the world's leaders at the summit at Gleneagles.

We Are The Powers That Be

"whe we the people lead, our leaders will follow"
"whe we the people lead, our leaders will follow"

The revolution IS being televised - a successful revolution cannot remain underground, it has to become mainstream to be successful and here it is - "when we the people lead, our leaders will follow" they have to or they no longer can remain in leadership roles.

Bob Geldolf has played a powerful card here and it is up to the rest of us to play ours - What are we waiting for?

Cynism has no place here, this is a high profile opportunity for us to make a major statement - this is bigger than any of the individuals and the individual agendas, this is bigger than africa or iraq - 1+1=11 - synergy -- the possibility of the synergy of one million people gathering for a party, a demonstration of unity and purpose is outragous - The world culture will be changed by this gathering occurring - if our leaders don't listen to the hearts of the people that they supposdly represent, they need to leave the stage and make space for those who do care and will listen.

Nice one Bob an co for getting the ball rolling, now lets see where we can take it.
I will be in Edinburgh

Why Edinburgh on the 1st Day of the Summit

01.06.2005 14:06

.... and not on the roads leading to Gleneagles?

This wouldn't have got permission to go ahead if it didn't serve the authorities purpose in keeping people away from where the focus should be: stopping the summit from taking place, not legitimising whatever weak tokenistic gestures it will deign to make on Africa or climate change.

Fuck Edinburgh, Get yr hiking boots and get to the Ochils if you want to have a real, positive effect.

ch

whatever...

let a bloody enormous crowd go to the gig if it sends a good message, but let there be at least 20,000 of us going to the summit itself, with the intention of stopping it. The police resources are going to be mighty stretched if they plan on policing a million in edinburgh, maybe it's a big diversion tactic for the security forces...though personally I think he's mad. But maybe, just maybe, St Bob and Maddy and co haven't actually heard of the Dissent! network or the plans to blockade the summit? Shouldn't someone tell them so they can publicise it? Some media-type out there must know how to get a message through Geldof's agent?

Civil Disobedience

03.06.2005 16:45

Dear Bono & Mr Bob Geldoff,

If you are reading this, I wish to congratulate you on using your power to raise awareness of the plight of the world's neediest. I wish to congratulate you on using your power to raise awareness that poverty is not something that "just happens" and that the political and corporate elite can make a real difference by dropping debts. With your power you have made the jump from "raising money" to "raising awareness" and this is a fantastic thing you have done.

With this in mind my friends, I urge you to consider asking protestors to amass on the roads to Gleneagles on July 6th rather than to march in Scottish cities. I urge you to consider encouraging your fans to block the roads to the G8 meetings by sitting down in them. I urge you to consider asking protestors to engage in non-violent direct action by physically and peacefully stopping the corrupt G8 meeting from going ahead.

Why? Because political leaders are way too likely to ignore us and our marches in the cities. Time and again the politicians have put corporate interests above the needs of the people. It is way too likely that they will ignore you and then where will we be? Back to square one with 30,000 children continuing to die.... daily....

Consider the history of civil disobedience - it has gained us everything from the right for women to vote, through to Black America being allowed to sit on buses, through to numerous events of a dangerous and malicious nature being shut down.

I realise you feel you are doing the best you can within your power, and I urge you to consider raising the stakes by encouraging civil disobedience in this instance.

Best Regards,
