Diaz victims group.
April 6th marks the first official trial day of the Diaz raid and the subsequent torture and abuse at the Bolzaneto detention camp which occurred during the G8 summit, July 21/22nd 2001. It is very important that these proceedings have placed on trial a total of 75 police and five doctors, 47 at Bolzaneto and 28 police from Diaz.
Fourteen victims of the raid have arrived in Genoa to witness the first day of the trial. Due to legal reasons, the trial is going to open and then adjourn until the summer. Also the case will be moving to another court in Genoa due to the reason that one of the judges is also retiring and a new judge needs to be chosen. It is not expected that their name will be announced.
Massimo Pastore, one of the Genoa Legal Forum lawyers, will be making an application for the case to be opened at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. In a test case, indymedia journalist, Mark Covell will be taking European level legal action against the Italian interior ministry. Furthermore it is hoped that the ECHR will take a more decisive action on the question of Gianfranco Fini.
It is also difficult to comprehend that the police officers on trial could act without political sanction and direction. The Diaz is too big an operation for police officers to take solo decisions to raid the school, inflict so much physical-mental damage and pain and expect to walk away as free men.
From today, British lawyers in London representing five British victims will be launching a private civil action against Gianfranco Fini and accusing him of ordering the raid on Diaz.
we also gratefully acknowledge the comments and statement from Amnesty International.
