Happy Birthday Critical Mass

London Critical Mass will be celebrating our 11th year of monthly bike rides on April 29th.

Last year we had (at least) 800 cyclists out on the streets, we had a bike samba band, live guitar from a rickshaw, multiple sound systems, bikes the like of which we have never seen. It was massive, and we want to do it again!

We meet on the southbank at Waterloo (NFT Cafe under Waterloo Bridge) from 6pm till about 6:30 on the last Friday of every month, then ride around London together without the danger of cars and lorries, everyone brings their own ideas to the mass, feel free to bring yours!

i understand your confusion with the leaflet
- it has no month on it -
but the 29th it is refering to, is the 29th April.

this is mentioned in the text below the flyer,
and if you go to their web site, and check...

i was at last years celebration, and it was pretty cool
being amongst those many hundreds of bikes!!!

totally recommend it.
let's make it bigger.
see you there...

actually, it does say april on flyer...

...missed that myself
- the flyer is a little too large, and the edge was off my browser

didn't check enough myself - oops!

Yeah Happy Birthday,

just seen the start of Marathon Man though which includes a mass bicycle ride as environmental protest and that was made in 1976, maybe Chris Carlsson got the idea after a night at the flicks???? Now there's an interesting project for some academic to get their teeth into.

Keep on pedalling, love one of yer own.

Chris Carlsson's idea was independent of this!

=v= Chris Carlsson didn't get the idea from any movie, but when putting together the 10th Anniversary Critical Mass book, we came across a bunch of rides from the past. There were "Bike-Ins" in New York City in the 1970s, and a "campaign for good roads" mass bike ride in San Francisco on July 25th, 1896. (A significant date, since the San Francisco police riot against Critical Mass was July 25th, 1997.)

One aspect that distinguishes Critical Mass from these early rides is that they keep going on, month after month, and even more frequently in some places!
