The Diaz trial of 28 policemen has been recommended to the European Court of Human Rights by the Italian prosecutor, Dr Enrico Zucca, following meetings with Mark Covell, the indymedia victim and primary witness in the Diaz trial.
He said,” the crimes are so serious, of an international dimension and because I have exhausted all legal means in Italy to identify my attackers and to get justice here. I am therefore taking this action through the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg against the Italian interior ministry. I just hope that the Italian interior ministry wake up and realise the road crash that they are about to have and compensate the 93 victims of the Diaz/Bolzaneto raid as quickly as possible.
Mr Covell will be the test case and confirmed that it was an unusual and rare move for the prosecutor to recommend the case to the ECHR. Covell was told that given the international and European dimension to the case, it was important for the case to be heard at the European level.
