Conscious fashion - report from sunday

nologo | 15.02.2005 12:30 | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | London

The first day of conscious fashion week was themed on the exploitation of labour with slave camps, sweat shops, child
labour, reclaiming labour and the economy of fashion.

Saddly it didn't go off quite to plan with no-shows from a patchwork head and the Friends Of Falun Gong who were going to be talking about labour camps in China. A couple of the films never materialised either but the show must go on, and it did...

There was an introduction to the inspiring YOMANGO which approbriates the name of 'Mango', a popular Spanish clothing chain which has now spread all over Europe. In Spanish slang Yomango means 'I steal' and has been turned by activists into a brandname which like it's capitalist counterparts, is not so much about selling concrete stuff, but more about promoting a lifestyle ;-)

see www.yomango.net

Representatives for 'No Sweet' and 'Labour Behind Label' talked about working conditions associated with production for big name brands, sportswear and UK high street with an aim to getting people to consider the conditions of those workers producing their goods.

There was a screening of excerpts from 'The Corporation' which took as a case study the disparity between pay, conditions and the price of goods between the people that make them, the bosses and the consumers that buy them.

There was meant to be a performance by The Washroom Project but the low audience numbers convinced them to take their performance out into the real world and they left to do they thing at Liverpool Street station so I can't say anymore about it.

Did Friends of Falun Gong Inc directors take a European vacation?

29.08.2005 00:31

I wonder if the the directors just went to Europe and had a little vacation on their non-profit corporation's tab? The link shows Friends of Falun Gong Inc. taking in millions and they can't make it to their commitment? I hope they didn't charge their vacation to their precious cause.
