Valentines Party Pooped

Even the Asian Dub Foundation Soundsystem was booked, but the Law likes a soft target.

Location: St George's Circle Community Centre, Tufnell Park.
On the evening of Saturday the 12th of February, there was going to be loads of lovely loud music including the Asian Dub Foundation, the Rub, and DJ Rubbish and Rhythms of Resistance, the 40-piece samba band.
But the police decided to have a presence, so any entertainment was prohibited, and noise could not be above 75 dB, about as loud as a main road. The cancellation was under threat of a £20,000 fine from Islington Council, arising from a misunderstanding about the licensing laws. I noticed no alcohol being served, and the space wasn't even technically open to the public.
All was not lost, though. There were loads of workshops, and a lovely atmosphere. Some great artists hosted microphone-using workshops, including an inspirational demonstration of poetry from Angel. And there was a great fasion show, 100% Sweatshop free.
