Blair Tells Russian Lawmaker He's Holding Election May 5th

via Joe Broadhurst | 11.02.2005 15:31 | Indymedia | London

Tony Blair plans to hold an election on May 5, a Russian lawmaker said yesterday after the British prime minister turned down an invitation to Russia's Second World War Victory Day celebrations."British Prime Minister Tony Blair said there will be elections in his country on May 5, and that is understandable," Konstantin Kosachyov, chairman of the State Duma foreign affairs committee, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

But Blair's Downing Street office said he hoped to attend the May 9 ceremony in Russia and refused to comment on remarks by Kosachyov regarding the poll dates.

Technically, since there are County Council elections on May the 5th, Blair needn't be saying that the General Election is on May 5. Though that is the most likely date.
