Today's UNISON's Industrial Action Committee meeting gave the go-ahead for a strike ballot of local government workers in England, Scotland and Wales to oppose proposals to change the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
An official strike ballot will now take place in England, Scotland and Wales. The ballot will close on 9 March 2005. Members will be asked to support strike action, which will be discontinous. The action will start with one day, with the probability of further action unless the government backs down.
UNISON activists should be planning now for meetings to build the strongest campaign for a YES vote in the official strike ballot.
The likely date for the first day of strike action will be known in the next few days, and is subject to discussions with other public service unions about possible joint action.
