Dress better than people you hate

Rampart Street Social and Creative Centre hosted an anti-fashion show by Selene on Friday 17th December. A stunning aray of fashion created entirely from fabrics and trimmings found on the local streets was backed by original artworks and music. These clothes are available on your local high street - but you need to make them: no sweatshops involved.

The crowd (smaller than had been hoped) seemed to be more appreciative the less fabric was actually on show, but any suggestion of gender bias to appreciation of skin rather than fashion is quite unwarranted - besides, they liked the stockings.

The clothes were modern and feminine, mostly following the body with a lot of slinky bias cutting, but some stunning use of lace ruffles and circular sleeves. Colours were reminiscent of a morning dert under a pale blue sky. Selene created all of the clothes in three very long days, and was understandably a little tired and emotional, but happy with her work: as she deserved to be.

This show "Halo Rampart - Dress Better than People you Hate" is a work on route to the ALTERNATIVE LONDON FASHION WEEK in February 2005.

good idea. get connected with people doing conscious fashion, clothes recycling, diy fashion aso to build up a powerful alternative to the posh fashion week in february in london.
against cheesy labels and child labour...

Those clothes are far too skimpy for cold winter weather. By the way the mountain men of north America in the nineteenth century used to make all their own clothes and shoes. But they used animal skins, something that you would porbably not approve of.

Yeah the native americans used animal skins. But those people had a great respect for animals, compared to contemporary western 'civilisation'. Many tribes made a point of not wasting a single part of the animal. And some of them used to ritually worship the animal immediately after the slaughter. (Not much consolation for the animal but then it had to die of something didn't it and it shows that people had respect for animals rather than considering themselves to be arrogantly in 'domination' over the animal kingdom, as in the west where people seem to think they can do whatever they want with animals without giving it a second thought).

And they didn't have cotton or synethic fabrics to make clothes out of so what else were they supposed to where instead? Actually are synthetic fabrics alright to use? Don't forget they're made from OIL.

Don't usually say such things, but phowar! seriously though, well done Ramparts, you are doing some great things, i have my doubts about squats but you seem different and don't take yourselves too seriously, one question though, were there any models of a fuller figure like, body image and all that, not all women look like like the above.

from 13.-17.2.05 at the rampart creative centre, 15-17 rampart street, whitechapel, E1 2LA
with workshops on:
campaigns against sweat shops in the fashion industry (yes it also happens in whitechapel as well),
campaigns against child labour in the fashion industry,
dictate of beauty of the models causing eating disorders on girls/women,
environnemental damage by the fashion industry,
the activist use of fashion, liberating fashion,
alternative materials like hemp,
recycling clothes- clothes recycling,
diy fashion (weaving, sewing, knitting, crocheting, millining, lingerie, cobbeling, screenprinting/stenciling...)
and fashion shows
reclaim the catwalk!!!
