Battle of Sherwood commences as Under-sheriff risks protestors lives

storm | 06.12.2004 10:46 | Ecology | Globalisation | Repression | London | Sheffield

Eviction underway at Sherwood Green Protest site, Nottinghamshire - Under-Sheriff risks tunnellers' lives, trees protestors have been cleared, tree-felling underway.

After over 14 months spent protecting a village green from illegal destruction. Protesters in Sherwood forest are facing the toughest day - Police turned up without warning at 8 this morning and started to evict them.

The trees were evicted quite fast , but there is a tunnel network that will take far longer. The tunnels are well stocked and extremely well defended.

No notice was given that the evictions were to take place and the Under-Sheriff of Nottingham (whose ultimately in charge of evictions in the area) told the protesters only last week, that there would not be an eviction while legal cases were still outstanding.

Protesters and local people are currently trying to prevent the police from getting near the tunnels to stop any further destruction of the village green.

As this release goes out, the beech tree which is at least a couple of hundred years old is facing the axe.

Several people are known to be in tunnels, local residents watch in anger, and the Nottinghamshire Police who previously assured them that no tree-felling would take place until the tunnels had been evicted, have now allowed felling to commence – of very large mature trees, directly above the siting of the tunnels – which could cause a fatal tunnel collapse.

...separating language from reality fine style:

Earlswood

Earlswood is a beautiful new development from Bellway Homes - at Mansfield Woodhouse, Mansfield, it offers stylish 2 and 3 bedroom homes in a semi rural location.

There has been a settlement at Mansfield Woodhouse since before Roman times, the village was almost destroyed in a great fire in 1304! Since then the area has prospered and is now a sort after location, easy to get to, close to beautiful countryside and still close to the major cities of Derby, Sheffield and Nottingham, right at the heart of Robin Hood country.

Mansfield is ideally located for those who need to travel regularly, there is easy access to the motorway network, M1 J27, 28, 29, the A38 to the West Midlands and the A60 to Nottingham.

Surrounding Area

There is a central coach/bus station near to the main shopping areas, and the Robin Hood Line provides a rail link to Nottingham. For international travel East Midlands International Airport is approximately 28 miles away.

This busy town has a colourful and interesting past - still reflected today. At the hub of Mansfield is it’s Market Place, surrounded by historic buildings, it is still the site of the market, which is over 700 years old and still has over 240 stalls! If more retail therapy is needed there are the Four Seasons and Rosemary Centre indoor shopping malls and St. Peters and the Portland Sidings retail parks. Mansfield has something for everyone from large chain store outlets to individual and unique specialist shops. For entertainment and relaxation it is equally impressive with fabulous places to eat, modern and traditional pubs, the Museum & Art Gallery and the Palace Theatre. For those keen to keep fit there are many sports centres and leisure facilities -
Medan Sports Centre, Mansfield Leisure Centre and the Manor Park Sports Complex to name a few.

For those with families Mansfield offers a comprehensive range of services for child care and through all stages of education, toddler groups to F.E. There is a good network of health facilities within the community and a main hospital on the boundary with nearby Ashfield.

Make the move of your life to Earlswood.

health and safety

07.12.2004 21:02

Not sure whether this is relevant to this particular eviction, but I found out recently that it is a CRIMINAL breach of health and safety law for anyone to get in or out of a cherry picker while at height (i.e. you can climb in and out onto the ground or the base of teh unit, but not onto, say, a tree or roof) Presumably forcing someone into or out of the platform would also be an offence. If this is relevant to this eviction, please post here and I'll track down references for the legislation...

and keep us posted...

love n rage,

laura
