On Wednesday 21st July, builders allegedly acting for the alleged owners of the building boarded the building up. They then left it undisturbed, after which the collective repossessed the building.
On Friday 23rd at around 10am, people in the building were surprised by a group breaking in, claiming to be working for SK Thakrar, the letting agents and chartered accountants who act for Glen International, alleged owners of the building. They left notices (not partioularly legal ones),telling us to get out, and told occupiers verbally that work was starting on the place soon...
About an hour and a half later, 2 cops arrived, saying they had been told to meet someone from SKT here as the place had been or was being burgled! Since no-one from SK Thakrar turned up to meet them they went away.
We have had no contact with the alleged owners or their alleged agents since we occupied the then-derelict building two and a half years ago. We have not been taken to court, no possession orders have been granted, and so any attempt to evict us will be illegal under Section 6 of the Criminal law Act. SK Thakrar seem unclear on this legal nicety though.
The notice they left tells us to leave by Monday 26th July. When a collective member tried to speak to someone oat SK Thakrar, they shouted abuse and informed us that the police would "deal with us" on Monday morning. So they seem to be expecting the police to either evict us or back up an illegal eviction. How realistic this is remains to be seen.
So far the people who have visited the Centre from SK Thakrar haven't been heavy, the opposite in fact, but that may change when we continue to refuse to move.
So we are asking for people to come down and help defend the Centre. We need as many people as possible to come Monday morning from 8am, we are also asking for people to come
down Saturday daytime,to help secure the place.
More information can be got from us by ringing 07984 588807
We're not planning on leaving. The alleged owners or their alleged agents have to take us to court, to remove us, and we will resist any attempt at illegal eviction.
