Undercurrents walks for Palestine

UNDERCURRENTS WALKS FOR PALESTINE

This Thursday two of the undercurrents video activist crew will join an architect, a media lecturer, a nature warden and twenty others on a 70km walk around Gower peninsula in South Wales to raise money to support young Palestinian refugees.

A diverse group of people formed the ‘Swansea Palestine Community Link’ last month aiming to raise funds for young people living in Balata refugee camp on the West Bank. Over £1000 has already been pledged which will purchase a video camera and computer.

One of the undercurrents walkers will risk travelling to the Middle East later this month to deliver the equipment. Mary O’Shea said:
‘I have watched the news in horror at the numbers of children who die each time Israeli troops invade Palestine. We hope that our small token of video equipment will enable the young Palestinians to record their own viewpoints of events. We will also organise video screenings to ensure that their stories will be seen and heard by the people of Britain.’

The sponsored walk is the first of a series of ongoing events organised by Swansea Palestine Community Link (SPCL). Later this summer, two of the Gower walkers will join an international protest to walk the entire length of the `security' wall being constructed by Israeli troops. The controversial barrier is dividing Palestinian neighbourhoods, separating workers from their jobs, children from their schools, and farmers from their fields.

Preparing for her walk,Undercurrents co-founder Helen Iles, added,
‘The Palestinian situation is terrible but if anyone would like to pledge support or offer sponsorship please do get in touch with us on 01792 455900 or  helen@undercurrents.org
